Ingersoll, was the appellant, was clis•
posed of. The case was an appeal
. from a decision of Police Magistrate
Chadwick, of Ingersoll, convictnig
Mayor Buchanan of an offence
Against the public morals in
connection with the management of
bis entire horses. The respondent
failed to establish the town by-law,
and the case fell through on a tech-
aaieality. The jury therefore quashed
the conviction.
—On Friday last while a son of Mr,
Miers, who lives on the 2nd conces-
ion of West Garafaxa, was moving
about the barnyard close to the
straw stack he heard what he thought
was a peculiar sound coming from
the stack, and upon investigation
he found, after having gone several
feet in the straw, a steer which was
•supposed to have strayed from the
premises some weeks ago. The ani-
mal was alive- but was considerably
reduced in flesh, and must have suf.
fered for want of food and water dur
ing its enclosure. The animal is doing
well.

—Dr. Mackenzie thinks the Crown
Prince's throat is in a better condit-
ion and that the new growth is noth-
ing serious.
—The Winnipeg carpenters have
'resolved to demand thirty cents per
hour and nine hours per day after
February lst.
—The Ontario Legislative Assem-
bly will meet Jan. 26, and the
reyised statutes of Ontario for 1887
will come'into effect. cin Dec. 31.

nearlya thousand women in lewd
who own farms, and give them their
personal attention: Only eighteen

The thirty-sixth year of the incum
bency of St. James church, Stratford
by Rev. E. Patterson, was celebrated
on the 18th inst, at vIlich Bishop
Baldwiu officiated.

Whitby, and two assistants arrested,
at Toronto, McRae and Denuin, whis-
key detectives, and the magistrate

adopted a resolution and instructed
its executive committee to • request

mont to oppose the passage of any
bill that has for its object the remov-
al of the duties from Avool sand raw
materiaL•and endeavor to secure such
legislation as Will protect the various
interest of the farmers of Vermont,
especially upon bark, lumber, wool
and poultry.
—Mr. Andrew McWilliam was
helping to put a new boiler in the
shoddy works at Galt. The boiler
had been jdcked and blocked, up
until it was supposed to be about
the right height ; but it lacked about
an inch at the north end. At- this

The prisoner was sentenced to bo
hanged on Feb. 10 next. Woolfolk
still declares that ho is innocent.
—A heavy wind storm at Crescent,
a town ton miles north of Los Angeles,
California, blew down a hotel in
which were 10 inmates. Mrs. Clem,
entrant Arnold aed a 10 -year-old
daughter were killed. All the °thud
were badly injured.
