This being the season of the year when uiultitudesof peoplo are adjusting their heating apparatu.,, preparing fop cold weather,, some will roej gouizo their owu experience in the following amusing description from. the American Artisan of the way'it is sotnetitnes done: In the first place, the roan puts on au old and,,. very ragged coat. Then he puts his hands inside ,the place where the pipe ought to -go, and blsokous his fingers, and then studiously makes a .black mark down the side of his nose. Having got his nose properly frescoed, the elan grasps one side of the bottom of the stove, and his wife and the hired girl take hold of the other side, and iu this way the stove is started from the woodshed to the parlor. Iu passing through the door tho man carefully swings his side of the stove around and jams his thumbnail against the door post. Ar last the stove 18 set down • in the proper place and the • than and his wife and the hired girl set out in a triangular search after the stove legs. Then the man goes for tha stove- pipe and gets a cinder in his eye. The stove was put up in first-class shape last year by the stove than, but this year the pipe proved to be a little too long. So the elan jams his hat down over his eyes, takes a piece oT pipe under each arta, anis starts for' the tin shop to have- it fixed. 'Then he comes back, steps his muddy boots into one of the best parlor chairs to see if the pipe will fit, when his wife snakes hint come down. In the act of deco d- ing he plants his foot square don on the hollow of the cat's back, and comes within au ace of trampling the baby under foot. 'Then the Ulan gets au old chair.,from the kitchen and clitubs tap to the chiultley opening again, and snakes the startling discovery that in cut- ting ori' the cud of the pipe, the Ulmer had made the pipe too large to enter the holy in the chimney.. So the man goes into the backyard. and splits one side of the end of the pipe with an old axe, and squeezes it between his hands until he snakes it smaller. Then the luau gets the pipe into shape only to find that - the stove' does not stand true, Then the lean and his wife and the hired girl move rho stove to the left .and the legs fall out again. The legs are replaced and the stovo• moved to -the the right, and there is another seance with alto. legs. Then' the elbow is found not to be even with the hole in the. chimney, and 'the man goes into the woods'hod after some little blocks. Thou the man and his wife and the hired girl essay to put the blocks under the legs, and the pipe conies out of the chimney. The pipe is replaced in the chimney hole, when the elbow commences to topple over. .The mar's wife is visibly agitated, and the man gets the dining table out of the kitchen and balances an old chair on it, and makes his wife hold the chair while 'he performs ncrol,- slie t•0a:s on the gland combine, in an Wort to drive some nails info the ce'''•ig, (luring which perform.. aura the elan drops the hammer down upon his wife's devoted head, and she Surprises hila with ,a yell null suints of the emulation of a Comanche l :ellen. • binitlly the man .completes the grand act of driving the nails• ,cou- si1.11ets a wide swing to hold the elbow in position, hammers' the pipe a little on one side and then a little en the other pulls ono joint a a little here and pushes another length a littltld, there, gives vocal expression to a series of deprecatory and mildly profane adjectives, takes a long breath, breathes a deep drawn sight, of relief, and proudly an- nnnu •,•, thot the job is finished.- • f! The Devil festival is said to have originated in a legend of the mother of a fabulous person, Mullen ; she as about t}io wickedest person then in existence, there being no crime which she left uncommitted. After her death, she appeared one night to her son Mu -lien with a heavy wooden collar round her neck, and she—harrowed his soul with the tale of her sufferings iu the lower regions. She said she was enduring the penalty of her unnumbered sins during her earthly life and \pleaded with her sou to deliver her out of the hands of Pluto. This to him seemed au im- possible task, as nu human being can enter the dark regions and re- turn alive. She told hint that he must be- come a Buddhist priest, and that there was a door in a certain Budd- hist temple which he could open and so lot out the prisoners froth the shades below. The On, beiug filial, obeyed the behest of his Mother, and sought out it well- known Buddhist priest iu a cerosin fatuous temple and asked to be admitted as a novice. As his life was pure .the priest willingly admitted hiul:• After having been there several months and learned all the Bashi - hist prayers; he sought out the door that led to the Lower Shades, whither the wicked ones had gone, and, remembering his mother's in- struction, he 'knocked open the door. The Jtidge Pluto -being always will- ing to release his victims upon the intercession of saints, he has set all his prisoners free for a certain length of time every year, beginn- ing on the 15th of the seventh moon, ever since the time when St. Mu lien knocked open that door. It has become customary for the peoplo throughout the country, in the seventh moon of every year, to worship their ancestors, whose spirits are then at 'large. The . annual Devil festival held by the Cantonese and . Tuhkienese began the other day by theatricals, etc., at their cemetery below, Hsing Hua. Ohun.It will last three days and three nights. The people from Canton and Fuhkien provinces are not few, and those whose remains aro buried here aro numerous.
