Reminiscences of Kilmarnock.
Itoarin' Peter was an Irishman
with more than else usual share of
the ready wit peieuliar to his eauu.
trytueu. He Was an uuctioueering
cheap Jack, awl in speech hail a
stroug Irish accent. Pater took a
very active put iu the Parliament
ary election of 1832. 'That, being
the first election, so to speak, which
ever took place it the town, very
.great was the excitemeut which pre-
vailed. The.prese"t generation can
forte uo adequate coukt;ptiou of the
commotion and stir iteeoecasioned.
Prior to the day of election there
was a great deal of canvassing and
speechifying and stump oratory of
one kind and another. 'There were
two candidates -Captain Dunlap, of
Dunlop, and James Campbell, Esq.,
of Craigie. Dunlop was tite p?pu
lar candidate, and a great favorite
with the bulk of the peeper,. B.otu•.
ing Peter espoused the Captain's
cause, and mounted on the dyke at
the end of the old -Batter Market,
he delivered himself oftim followings
speech :-
"My fellow•countryinen, yez all

a grand election, and that there are

Disgracetul. Fight Between
Preachers.
At the Santification or Holiness
camp in Hammibal, Missouri, the
other day, the Rev. J. Dennis, one
of the evangelists, preached a sermon
one night on,„the subject of "Glori-
fication.” The Rev. Robert Chis-
holm took exceptions and called
hila to order, but the speaker con-
tinued. Chisholm therefore mount-
ed the' rostrum and began to speak.
Each tried to cry the other down,
and, failing in this, they clinched
and each tried to pull the other alt
the platform. During the excite-
ment some one blew out 'the lights,
and the meeting came to an abrupt
termination. Each had 'the other
arrested, and next day at the trial the
Rev. Chisholrn•was fined $5, which
l>u._paid, .anti -the Rev. Dennis,'_$10,
but was unable, to pay the fine, and
.now lies iu jail. -
Squiee.ky Shoos.
The other day a customer went
into a Clinton ilioe•store, and com-
plained that he had been cheated
on a pair of' low cut., „five dollar
shoes. "Cheated 1" asked the pro-
prietor: "Was there anything the
matter.with the shoes?"
"Ah, well" -the customer shrug-
ged his shotltdet's-"We'll say uo
more ;Mout it, but they was a
moighty chap° pair of shoes."
"What makes you think they
were a cheap,pair, Mr. O'Brien V'
"Sure," said he, "all haven't I
wore the shoos fur fall six wakes,
and not a,sr;u .1•:0 have .I had out o'
thiul at all
'On being tutu this story by the
proprietor of the store where the
accident happened, the dealer was
asked what 1111(10 shoes 3t111 'tk,'ally-
way, and why it there aro nut as
many squeaky siluca 1lutvadaye as
Utero used to be ? The writer re-
membered the .Limo W11011 the
entrance of the Worshippers into
church On Sunday Sonning used to
be a chorus of squeaks, which al-
most drowned the organist's volun-
tary. Nowadays a squeaky shoe is
an exception.
"It is simple enough," said the
boot and shoe man. "Tho squeak
comes from the rubbing of the
upper sole of the shoe upon the
lower or outer sole, when there aro
two layers of leather. With only
one thickness of leather in the solo
a shoo could not squeak, and it can-
not squeak with two soles properly
treated, as they aro in most cases
nowadays. Tho commonest method
is to put a preparation of soapstone,
or some other lubricating substance,
on the inner surfaces of those soles
before they are put together ; this
causes them to move upon each
other tloisely when the wearer
walks.

merolal `Union.
Toronto, Oct. 1887.-S4 : I
have received your circular of Sept.
17 sent to 1110 as a member of the
house of commons, onelosiug a copy
of a speech delivered by you on
Commercial union, and asking an
opinion upon it.
I must tell you that I am utterly
opposed to it, as, in my mind, com-
mercial union simply moaus.annoxat-
ion, .1 result to be deplored by
every true Canadian and unlikely
to happen without the shedding of
a lot of Canadian blood. We are
now, despite what the advocates of
commercial Union say, a happy,
prosperous and contented people.
I am positive no pecuniary advan-
tage would accrue to Canada from
commercial union ; but, even grant-
ing all that you say as to the in-
creased prosperty that it would
bring to us, I would still be oppos-
ed to it. We do not in Canada
place as high a value upon the
"almighty dollar" as do the Yan-
kees, and we hope always to be
Canadians. 1Vhy should we sever
bur connection with the mother
country, which has in the pest done
so mucin for us, for the . sake of
throwing in our lot with a people
who propuce more bauk thieves and
embezzlers than any other country
on the globe, a people who caro so
little for the sanctity of the marriage
tie that 100 divorces a day have
been grantodAin one city. TO do
so would be national suicide. No
pecuniary advantage can ever out-
weigh our national life or our nat-
ional 1101101'.
The appeals in favor of commer-
cial union are all addre3sed to the
pocket.
But I havo confidence in my fel-
low -country men that they will
place our national honor and our
independence above all pecuniary
considerations.. A man worthy of
the name' will not sell his own
honor or his wil'e's, or is daughter's,
for money. Such a proposal could
not ,for a. moment bo ctonsidered
from a financial standpoint, and no
people worthy of the name would
ever sacrifice their national honor
for material advantage. There is
no sentiment that produces such
sacrifices as national sentiment, and
you gentlemen who advocate com-
mercial union argue as if my coun-
try men would sell everything dear
to them for money. You entirely
misunderstand our people. Believe
111'e, yours truly,
FIRED C. DENISON.

from the paintings on ancient

like those in use at the present
time were known many years be-
fore the Christian era; they were
also used among the Romans, but
only by women. In many coun-

been a part of an insignia of royal-

still the case in parts of Asia and

CORNS AND BUNIONS. A SURE
CURE.
It is surprising the enormously in-
creasing prevalence of corns and
bunions in this generation, and still
more so when we remember that
for the trifling sum of 25 cts. the Sure
Cute or Sure Bunion Cure can be
obtained. A prominent professional
gentleman remarked onthestreet the
other day: ,al tried every known pre-
paration for corns without effect, and
concluded there was no cure when
a friend recommended the Sure Corn
Cure. As a last resort I tried it, with
the desired effect. My corns have
all disappeared, and I am now con.
vinced that there is a Sure Cure for
Corns at last, and in justice to the
proprietor, W. S. Backwell, our
