band by a picnic last week.
—A Burns, St. Mary's, has a
mammoth squash that turns the
scales at 120 lbs. It is five feet in
circumference, and still growing.
—The Chicago anarchists, who
killed -the police with bombs will
likely Swing. The Supreme Court
.of Illinois has confirmed their death
sentence. •
—Thomas Clufl', 22 years of age,
was drowned in the river at Sarnia
on Wednesday morning. A brother
-of Cluff's was burned to death in
Potrolia about a year age. •
—Witnesses in a Scott Act case
.at Fingal swore that they drank on,
dy 'Presbyterian wine' at the hotel
being proceeded against. The intig-
'istrate reserved decision until the
nature of the drink was determined.
—A guessing contest over the
'number of shoe pegs in a glass jar
has just been concluded in Brant-
ford. The correct' number was 13,-
245. Miss Bettie James guessed
13,222 and took first prize.
—George Brent, of Warwick,
bad^$1,500 in the Fawcett Bank
when it failed. When he received
his share of dividend he deposited it
in the London Bank; 'and on t'ie
following day that institution rinsed
its doors.
—The fair held at Zurich last
week was a success, favored with
very fine weather. The entries were
• about the same as last year. The
inside department was good, fruit
first-class, and roots and dairy pro-
duce good. Grain and seeds were
fully ui► to last year's exhibit. The
outside department was first-class,
represented in all branches. The
receipts at the gete. were about the
same as last year.
--Two Clifford youths drove to
13arriston on a recent Sunday and
put up their hors: at an hotel and
separated to spend the evening with
their respective "friends.' The first
to •turn up found the stable closed,
and concluding that his chum had
gone and left him he started on foot.
The other came along and:forming a
precisely similar conclusion, be also
did the tramp act, the horse nears
while being in the hotel stable..
The rig was sent for next' day.
—Seven -years in the penitentiary
was the punishment awarded Ed-
ward Brand by. Judge Armour at
• Hamilton for assaulting a constable
who had arrested him. Brand was
assisted by several others and the
officer was brutally kicked and bit
ton on the face and. hands. • The
others wore caught and sentenced,
but Brand escaped, only to be re-
captured on his return a few weeks
ago.
—Albert McEwen, a well-to-do
fanner of North CIowcr, Cal•leten
County, has taken an action against
R. Andrews, of Burritt's Rapid,
claiming $50,000 for seduction of his
danghtel',who it is alleged was ruin-
ed by Andrews and taken to Water-
town,N. Y., where she was delivered
of a child and died. Andrews is a
Wealthy mant.and is a relative of
the nnfortunatl( girl. The cast is
likely to be tried at the Assize
Court next month.
—The Alliance Convention ]net in
Richmond Ball, Toronto, last week,
Mr .J. J. Maclaren, Q.C., chairman of
the executive, iu the chair. In his
opening address he referred briefly
to the progress made since the last
similar meeting. Ho recited the
.action taken by the House of Com-
mons in declaring ,that the Scott
.Act should be sustained and in vot-
ing down • it resolution favoring
general prohibition. Ho declared
that in spite of his party proclivities
he would oppose the 1•e -election to
Parliament of any elan who held
with the majority against thatrnsolu-
tion. Committees were appointed
on campaign, on Scott Act enforce-
ment and on political action while
the time to adjournment was taken
up with brief addresses containing
suggestions to the committee.

—A 8400,000 lire in 'Chicago
Friday last.
--The total loss of the San Fran-
cisco wheat cornorors is now put
down at about $7,500,000.
—The United States authorities
say that the Chicago boodler Mc•
garigle cannot be extradited from
Canada.
—Premier Norquay is reported
to be on his way home without hav-
ing raised money in New Yarlc. for
the Red River railway.
— A collision occurred on the
Midland railway of England near
Doncaster last week by which twen•
ty persons were killed and over 70
injured.
—The Toronto exhibition closed
last Saturday and was a grand nue-
cess. From 40,000 to 50,000 uta,
tended daily. Receipts were $52,000,
being $12,000 increase over last
year.
— A Belfast despatch says :—A
party of Orangemen while passing
through Gregn.Caatle, a town near
Belfast, Saturdey night had an err
counter with Nationalist residents,
Three, policemen who tried to quell
the disturbance were stoned and.
driven away. The local authorities
sent a despatch to Belfast, flaking
aid, and a force of police was accord•
i-ngl.}-sont to Green Castle. The
reinforcements had the effect of aw-
ing the rioters, and peace wag soon
established. Ten of the principal
participants were arrested.

offering as yet. No. lis quoted at 62c to

OATS. --There is a moderate demand and
prices rule steady. New sold at 34c on
track, and old are nominal at 35c.
PE.ts.—Trade is dull, and in absence of
sales, prices are nominal at 58c to 590 for
No. 2.
13t"r'rcn.—The supply is moderate and
the demand goal, with sales at 19c to 21c
for goal to choice dairy. Round lots in
the country are quoted at 16c to 17c.
Inferior to medium qualitiesjob at lac
to 16c, and rejections sell at 10c to Ile in

Eaas.—There is a good supply, and
prices are about steely at 15e. a dozen in
round lots.
Cein•,sE.—Thera is a fair demand with
sales at 12o in small lots;
PoTn'rolts.--Receipts are increasing and
prices steady at 85c per bag in^ car
lots and at $1 for small lots.
Wool,. — The market is steady,
receipts being moderate. Good fleece
brings 204, to 210, selections 22c to 230,
and rejections tic to 18e. Southdown,
25c to 26c.
