—The wife of Rev. W. A.
Hunter, of St. Andrew's church,
oraegeville, gave birth .to a daugh-
ter one 'day last woke. The child's
head was somewhat sole, and the
Wending physician gave instruc-
tions to have the head well tubbed
with castor oil. The nurse com-
mitted the terrible mistake of rub-
bing the head with carbolic acid
which sho found iu a bottle near
that containing the castor oil. The
' infaut.lingered for Three days, when
it died in groat agony.

Search, of Georgetown, went to
Milton with a seven-year-old boy
named Sullivan, whom he left in
charge of Jailer Vanallon. It seems
that the child placed an obstruction
of some kind on the G. T. R. track,
..end was prosecuted by officials of
the company who, though informed
of the age of the child, insisted
on prosecuting hint, claiming
that he was old enough to be re-
sponsible. He was committed for
trial, ,,Although only seven years
of ago, the lad is said to he an in-
corrigibly had boy.

—John Nicholls, residing on the

Orangeman does not debar him
from being a member of the Loaguo,
provided he is a Home Ruler. Mr.
.Sullivan founded his defence on
the platform of the League.

arrived yesterday with a good staff
of mon; the rolls are here, too, and
the work of fitting up the shops
will commence to day. They have
already had 50 tons of scrap iron
shipped to • commemce with. A
largo number of men will be employ-
ed from now out; and: the enterprise
will add greatly to the wealth and
importance of the Fifth Ward,—

. Another shocking outrage was•
perpetrated at Hamilton, July 19th,
the third of the kindwhich has oc-
curred within a few 4ys. A four-
year-old daughter of Charles
Reid, 61 Robert street, was en-
ticed away from near the doorstep
of her home by an unknown mean
about 25 years of age. Three hours
later she was found by the•. once
on a common near the oit5 oma -
tory alone. "Her clothing ha near-
ly all been torn off, and slt-e_,had
been brutally outraged. The fail-
ure. of the police to capture any of
the three scoundrels who have re-
cently committed outrages on little
girls in this city is cansing much
unfavorable comment.
—July 18 in the afternoon a
colored leen named Howell, who
says lie is a stranger here, having
just arrived froth' Alabama, entered
the residence of Mrs. McLean, about
Dight miles west' Of Chatham, and
asked for soap and water. While his
request was being complied with 110
caught Mrs, DlcLeau by the throat.,
threw her down and attempted to
commit an assault. She was bitten
and struck unmercifully by the
brute. She is within a few weoks
of confinement, but the doctors think
she will recover. The than was
caught by a crowd of neighbors who
put a rope around his neck and would
have lynched him but for the plead-
ing of sonic cooler heads. He was
brought to town and lodged in
jail. •
—A man living near Little Rock,
Arkansas, hada stepson five years
old, whom he greatly disliked. Ido
was known to treat him most cruelly,
boating him in a terrible manner,
once putting one of his eyes out
while whipping him. A few days
ago he heat the child in ahorrible
manner, and then tied him by the
wrists to a stake in the hot sun with-
out food or water until he died.
How long the child was there is not
known, but the cords at the wrist
had cut into the flesh, and the
wounds were filled with worms.
Thefiend finding his victim was
dead, armed himself and took to
the woods. The chi•id's mother
seems indifferent in regard to the
affair.

—There was a smash up on the
C. P. R. ,July 18, at Myrtle station,
South Ontario. Brakeman Mc-
Intosh was killed and several injur-
ed. Damage to rolling stock $25-
000. The accident was caused . by
the collision of two trains owing to
the brakes nZt working properly,
—Chief of Police Wilson, of In-
gersoll, was suspended and has since
resigned on account of alleged perse-
cution 'by the town council because
of his vigilance in looking after the
enforcement of the Scutt Act,

—Richard Hazard, of Fermanagh,
Ireland, fell into the. hold of the
steamship Oregon, at Montreal,
struck on his head,.and was killed

--A Canadian Pacific official says
the company have contracted to car-
ry 900 car loads of Australian wool
from Victoria, Pr. C., to Boston and'
other ports on the Atlantic States.
This wool was until this season
brought in sailing vessels to Ameri-
can ports on the Pacific and shipped
over the Northern Pacific to .Bos-
ton.
