he should be made Minister of Forest,

growing around houses; he would

A LONG ‘VA -mc. —A few days since
Mrs Craig, who formerly lived on the
Bayfield road, but who has been re-
cently living with her daughter, Mrs
Scales, on the 9th con, of Hallett,
started off on a short visit to her
daughter, Mrs Douglass McTavish, of
Stanley. Etre started to walk, ex-
•pectltig that she would met with a
chance to ride, but, unfortunately ebe
did not, and she had to walk all the
way, The distance is about ten milers
and is a pretty big tramp for a lady.

RUNAWAY,—On Wednesday after -
niacin while Messrs Will and Thomas
Jackson, jr,dr were returning, from a
funeral in a' ou'ble-carriage, the} lied
a runaway 'experience thaV. wet :not
:pleasant. Just as they name out on
Ontario St.,nearly opposite the school,
something frightened the horses and
they instantly broke into a gallop,
tearing down street at a tremendous
pace. When in front of ICennedy,'s
hotel, -Tom jumped out, and beyond
some slight bruises, eseeped unhurt.
A good many rigs were on the street
but Will, wild .was pluckily holding
n to.tlie libels of the team, kept them
lie..the.finiddle of the road, and euc-
ceeded in bringing them to a itand-
'still near Mrs Bay's. The speed of the
team was such that everybody expect-

hut the owners of it should feel thank-
ful that Mr Jagkgon'e nerl►e,and good
management -:nf" the team possibly
saved it from destruetionj and Himself

OPINIONS DIFFER.—llir John C.
Smith, of Chicago, formerly book
keeper with Mr Chris Dickson, is
here on a visit. He has not yet made
his fortune *nut there, but is in love
with the place, and its people, and
thinks that be is in a fair way of ac
quiring a competence in time. He
says that while Chicago contains some
bad people it also contains 'a lot of
good ones, and he 'likes the society,
associations and institutions bf the
Americans. Mr R. D. Bayley, of
Battle Creek, Mich.. (formerly of
Clinton) takes an almost entirely
different' view. He thinks the Ameri-
cans lack moral principle and are
wanting in those qualities which
make .scrupulous and conscientious
citizens. He has • not experienced'
that sociability which is so"often
spoken of as a characteristic of the
Awericans,and thinks that Canadians
who are .doing fairly well should be
content to stay is Canada.
STILL THEY COME.—Mrs Howson,
of RTtillett, whoseisons' are giving up,
farming, intends to take up her resi'
deuce in Clinton as soon as she can
secure a house. Mrs Jame" Brownlee
and family, of the base line, -are also
about to move into town, Mr John
Washington. of East Wawanosh, has
we believe, rented a house, and will
shortly become a permanent resident
of Clinton. There are others who
talk of buying property here, and as
Soon as they can conveniently put
a house thereon, will also become
citizens of the hub. Thera is this al -
vantage in buying property ,in Clin-
ton. It is one -of the few places that
is making material progress, and pro-
perty bought in town can almost in-
variably be sold at an advance.' Farm-
ers who are retiring. should bear this
in mind. Property is by no means a
drug in the market, and if you want
to locate in a place where investments
bring a .in
returu,'t'ake a location in
some totiaiwhere..you can re -sell "your
property'if Yoe Want 'to—and that
place is Clinton. Dr.Gutin, ofBruce-
