Fred. Eaglison's Pluck
(From Daily News, Aberdeen, South
Dakota.)
Fred Eagleson, formerly of Clinton,
Ont.,' but now a clerk in the 'employ
of the firm of Olwin-Angell Dry Goodl
company, tut evenieg uncovered one
of the suloethest and besteworiced
games of thievery that Alierdeea or
almost any other city ifs the country,
has eVer known. Two men and bwo
women are involved, and they had a
eernhination winaii was hard, to im-
prove for tire work they were, doing.
The sten drove drays for one of the
dray lines of the city, They, in, their
visits to the freight depots of the
city, to •get stuff for various firms,
stole both incoming an outgoing
goods in box lots. The women took
care- et th stores, shop-llitieg when,.
ever they got -at chance.
rt is 'believed Wet: the lour have
stolen at least one thousana dollars
• worth of goods of different hinds, a
goad deal of which was shieped out.
When the four were arreeted last
night and the premises searched
goods amounting to from three to five
huadrea dollars svere found:
The theft which led to • the discov-
ery of the, (leaflet end their nefarious
practices came about yesterday attere
noon at OlwineAngell's store. The
women have been suspected for wane
• time, but were never 'catight red-
handed. A short time ago one of the
women was deteetedin what was
thought to be a 'shop -lifting attempt
in the Sherman, Department store,
but Miss Fife saw her, and the • wo-
man dropeed the article she had tak-
en, as though ehe had beat examintitg
it. Since then a close watch was
kept on her whenever she 'entered
there.
Yesterday, however, . she was seen
by a clerk at Olwin-Angell's snatch a
bolt of silk, contaening, about thirty -
Ave yards, and put it under her cape
which she wore. The clerk told Fred
Eagleson, a young man 'employed Ulm
and: he followed her, trailing her to
her home. He arrived just a moment
after she did, knocked at the door,
and without waiting, for an •ensWer,
walked' in.
He caught her red-handed. She
handed Over tile silk, and Eagleson
then questioned her 'pretty closely.
She was .evidently so frightened and
rattled that she confessed thatshe
and her contecleeates Ised been steal,
ing wholcgale. Eagleson, then went
back to thestore, geked that .police
be summoned, and a search -warrant
sworn out; and then he hastened back
to the Gauchey house. . •
• He concealed himself and watched
• the thieves tratsferring a lot ot the
stolen property from the house to an
out -house, inthe hope • of concealing
it. • He did not reveal himself, being
content with seeing where it was put
.and to see that. • it wasnob tahen
aWay from the premiseg. Later the
police arrived. with a search -warrant.
Eialeson, having obeervece the opera-
tions of concealment, knew where the
goods were and 'took ' the polka he
them, so that alltheplunder oit the
premises was recovered. It wa,s tak-
en to the office of Justice Joneeeand,
the culprits were taken to the county.
