ONE OF THE OLD RESIDENTS. —No
man in this township is held in high-
er esteem than Mr John Baker, of the
16th concession, and very few men
can boast of longer. Continued resid-
ence in the township than he. Mr
Baker was only 3 years old when his
parents Moved heve, and as he is
about 65 now, he has been a continu-
ous resident for over 60 years. Of
course it was all bush when he came
here. •Speaking of his. early experi-
ence he says he used to see plenty of
• deer and similar game, but he never
came across either a wolf or a bear..
He is in prime health, and if he could
life for 65 years more, it would only
be realizing the wish of his many
friends..

That Hospital Grant
We do not wish to severely criticize
the County Council for eontributing
one thousand dollars to the Goderich
hospital and five hundeed to the Wing -
ham hospital, but we do thiek that in
all fairness they should at the mine
time recognize the splendid services
that the Clinton hospital has render
ed to the Countv, as well as to more
distant places. It may be argued that
the Clinton hospital is a private one,
owned, ane for the most part controled
by Dr Gunn. We can vouch for the
fact that not a few charity cases are
treated in the Clinton hospital every
year. Besides there is provision for
charity cases at the House of Refuge,
and• we announced before that the
Clinton doctors were willing to give
their services gratis to all such cases.
For several years the Clinton hos-
pital has had under its care, upwards
of two hundred cases annually, and as
is well known, a large proportion of
these include • surgical operations of
the greatest magnitude and difficulty.
•In fact there are few families in the
county that are not • indebted to the
Clinton hospital for the life or men -
fort of some of their friends, and if the
public hada voice in the matter, we
know where the assistance Would go
to. Dr Smith. the Inspector ef
hospitals &v:, when on a visit to this
place lately, remarked that the splen-
did work done lu the past in the Clin-
ton hospital shined not lie ignored,
We heve no doubt that Dr Gunn
would gladly hand over the hospital to
the town or county, if either Would
only run it. We are pretty sure that
neither would accept the offer.
We have only to remind the County
Council that the people of Clinton of-
fered them at one time the sem of ten
thousand dollars if only they would
build and maintain. a hospital at Olin
-
ton. in connection with the Home of
Refuge. Dr Gunn and the editor of
this paper Waited en the County Coun-
cil. :and urged the acceptance of this
offer. whieh,however was refused.
What we do earnestly recommend is
that the County Council placn at least
$1000in trust, le ih ed. `Ain restrictions,
for the care of cherity wade, and that
Dr Gunn be given the entire manage-
ment of the hospital, providing ,he is
• willing to assume the responsibility, .
with the assistance of the.other resid-
ent•doctors. Dr Gunn has the conficle
ence of the profession and they furnish
him with the greater number of his
• suegioal cases. Even Manitobe and
the far west, send cases every year
for operation and treatment. From
the fact that he hes kept the hoepital
running eolith] need yitn d satisfactorily
for eight years, we have every confid-
ence that he could continue to do so.
This is saying not • a little, for even
large- cities find It hard to maintain a
hospital.
