Leonard Sheppard has a rifle ball in his leg, the result of being hit by a random shot fired by his cousin, while in Manitoba HARD I71°. -The immigrant family tbat is oceupying Mr. Thos. Beacom's house, on the Varna road, is said to be in very straitened circumstances, and does not appear to get muchisympathy from the neighborhood, • because, it is alleged, the bead of the faroily has an aversion to work. People who come to this country and are willing to work, can find plenty to de, and this is the only class that is any good. WITLI THE TEACHERS. -We under- stand Miss Hayter, of No. 9 school, has resigned, to take effect at the end of the year; although Miss Hayter was engaged for the next term, she has since been offered a school near her home at a large salary. The trustees of the Bayfield line school deemed it wise to re-engage their present teach- er, at the salary required by law ; Miss Tichbcurne has filled the position, very efficiently,. and we believe the naajority of the ratepayers will be satisfied with the action of the trustees. NOTES. -0. B. Middleton has been laid off work for a time as the result of a sore knee. Will Perdue, jr., in what leisure moments he bas, iS study- ing engineering, his intention being to take out papers; we understand the law now requires that an applicant must take a certain course of work, in order to obtain an.engineer's license. The evidence showed that an ounce bottle had been found on the dresser, and this had been emptied of carbolic acid, lt is supposed that after his room -mate had gone down stairs, :de= ceased locked the door and swallowed the tioison. The members will be two in number, with the mayor a third,•ex- officio. 'There will be no salary at- tached to the position. The members will be nominated and voted on at, the same time as councillors. This was decided at the regular council meeting. FuNnetat-The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon of the late Matthew Johnston, aged 87 years ; Mr. Johnston was for a great many years a resident of Goderich townshrp, and previous to that lived in Stanley. T. R., ie $20,500, of which $13,835.00 is to be provided out of the municipality, and tne Venutillider assessed against the real property fronting upon tho street, the average rate per foot frontage to be about 21c. FALLS DOWN STAIIIS.-Barrister Holrnested met with an accident Mon- day morning that almost proved fatal, and the final resit of which is still ie doubt. He had just driven in from his home itt Ffarpurhay, and while ascend- ing the second story of the Scott block, either missed his footing or WaE, seized with a fainting spell, and fell bacieward down the stairs to the land- oinffigee of Dewras picked up in an uncon- scious condition and conveyed to the H. H. Ross, where his in- juries, consisting of a deep cut in the head, and otber minor cuts and bruises were attended to, and he was removed to his home. As he is SOMO- whfct advanced in years his friends are apprehensive of the result. $60,000 ADDED DEBT. ••- Municipal matters are now receiving the atten- tion of the ratepayers, and while it is hardly probable that Mayor Broderick will be opposed for a second term as it has became an established custom here to make the mayor's term two years), yet there is every indication of a warm contest for epees at the council board. With the paving of Main street, and the loans to the Canada, Furniture Company, and the Willis Shoe Company, about S60,000 of liabil- ities have been assumedby the corpora• tion this year, and this is causing the older and more conservative ratepay- ers to begin figuring on future tax rates. MAN ,r0 LOSE. •-• The report was around for a few days that we were going to lose ofir teacher, Mr. N. W. Trewartha, and we understand it was his intention to take uphis resi- nence on his own farm. It being quite close to a neighboring school, the trus- tees of which knowing the reputation of MreTrewarkha,were wise in endeav- oring to secure his services. Holmes ville school trustees, however, were not caught napping, and not wishing to lose a teacher and citizen of his stamp, very quickly made it to his in- terest to remain here, where he has given the best of satisfaction for six and a half years. RAILWAY MATTERS, -We are begin- ning. to think our town must be becone- hag quite iniposina in appearance from the B' ailway station, as on different occasions passengers have alighted from the train, supposing they had reached Clinton. So certain of this being the case, a young lady a day or two age, endeavored to get off after the train had started and fell, her satchel rolling down the embankment. The conductor very kiudly held up his train, and waited for her to come up and re -enter -not many raen would have done it. If the G. T.
