was bald for the purpose of the In-
spector explaining the operations of
the new act, Whim he did most ex-

change is too radical, and would have
been more acceptable had the salary
increase not been so great,

DRAM -William Lamprey, a resid-
ent of-Goderich township for 45 years,
died last Tuesday at his home on the
Huron road, aged about70. Mr Lam-
prey was born in Guelph, but for
nearly half a century has lived on the
farm, some three and a half miles from
etoderic19. He leaves two sous and
three daughters -O erea Herbert,
Miss Maggie and Miss Jennie are home
at present, and there is a tnarried
daughter living near Berlin, Mrs.
Lamprey predeceased her husband by
about fourteen .years. The late Mr.
Lamprey was a Presbyterian, and a
Reformer in politics. He was a
brother of ex -Mayor Lamprey, of
Guelph.

Lord's Supper was held in .S.t An-
drew's church on the last Sabbath in
.October. Rev Mr Sewers, of .13rgce-
field, conducted the preparatory ser-
vices on the Friday previous.
PRESENTATION. -Before leaving for
Sarnia Hospital, where she has enter,
ed as nurse, Miss.. Minnie Armstrong
was presented with a purse and ad-
dress from the choir of St Andrew's
church, of which she had very accept-
ably filled the positior of organist for
some time ; she will be greatly missed
in. church circles. . • •

Medical Health Officer Dr. W. J. R.
Hohnes, made his annual report last
Friday, • evening, showing 58 deaths
during the year, none of which w -ere
from scarlet fever, typhoid. or diph-
theria ; he added that • of the several
cases of • sickness from these causes,
where impure water had been blamed,
it was not ttiwn water, but well water
that had been in use. •
AWARDED $500 DAISIAGES, -Mr. Jus-
tice Anglin in non -jury sittings of the
high court here Wednesday rnerping,
awarded Elizabeth Wilkinson the sunk
of $500 for injuries received as a reselt
of a break in the floor of the fair build-
ing of the Grey and East Huron Agri-
cultural Society. Her husband, who
is also a plaintiff, recovers $150 from
the society. Mrs. Wilkinson met with
the accident this fall, and was so seri-
ously injured as to be unable to per-
form -household duties.

REcoMatENDs. NEW PLANT. -At • the
ceuriell Meeting Friday evening En-
gineer Kelly recommended the instal-
lation of almost an , entirely new
electric lighting plant to cerry 4,000
lights instead of 2,200. The expendi-
ture involved would be $12,200, unless
investigation should show the advisee
bility of using a producer gas engine ;
in which case, the cost would be inueli
less. The council have asked Mr Kelly
to go •to Berlin and Waterloo to look •
into systems- whereproducer gas
engines are used. TheYwill also peek
the services of Superintendent Mc-
Kenzie, of the Swift Company, New
York, who will be asked to advise in
the matter. •
"UNDER Comarissiora-The question
of placing the water and light affairs
•of the municipality in the handsof a
perinanent connnisbion for adminis-
tration, so often advocated in the
Council, will at last come before the
people. It is probable that it will be
voted On at New Years. The Commis-
sioners will in all likelihood be two in
riumber, with the Mayor an additional
member, ex -officio. Names for the
position will be voted on at the same
time, so. that if the proposition is
favored by the voters the Commission i
will be n existence immediately.
There will be in all probability a salary
atteched to the position, ,though •the
Council: are not unanimous on the

grading on -the C. P. R: has been al-
most completed here, and on Tuesday
four or five teams were dispatched to
'Goderich ; the carpenter work on the
station is finished and the building is
now ready for lathing and plastering.
Mr Roy Stalker has returned home
after his seasons cheeSerrufking opera-
tions, to spend the *inter. We under-
stand that the German Lutheran yes -
tor, Rev Mr Seidel, is leaving and in-
tends proceeding to New 'York ; Mr.
Seidel will preach his farewell sermon
On the 18th inst. The trustees of

A ceiemony took place at Montreal I
on Sunday in which Olintonians are
interested, the principal figure therein
being an old and beloved pastor of St.
Paul's church.
Right Rev. James Carmichael Was
enthronea as Lord Bishop of Montreal I
on Sunday afternoon, in the prese1ce.1
of a congregation that taxed the -seat.i
ing capacity of Christ church cathed- I
rat. It was the first occasion of the !
kind since 1879, whentlate Arch-
bishop Bond was.enthable-• ned, The can- I
diclatei attended by chaplains and a :
number of clergy, proceeded from the I
chapter house to ' the main entrance of
the cathedral. The door was closed,
so he knocked loudly thereon. Ven.
Archelea,con Norton, rector of Mont-
real, was waiting inside, together with
the churchwardens, the Dean and
chapter, choir, and other members of
the cathedral service. When the
knock was heard, Archdeacon Norton
asked •"Who is there ?" • The answer
came : "The Lord Bishop of Montreal,
who prays the Archdeacon and rector
of Montreal to enthrone him
The door was then opened, and the
procession formed. The choir led,
going up the main aisle of the cathed-
ral, followed by the vicar, cuaate. four,
canons, four archdeacons, the actilig
Chancellor. three chaplains, the candi-
date and the clergy. When this ina-

the Presbyterian Church here on Sun-

gregation.
SAD NEWS FOR PA RENTS, -Mr and
Mrs Watson, an old and respected
couple of town, received the sad news
last week of the death of their son,
Victor. No particulars are to hand,
except that he was killed on the rail-
road some place in Michigan. He was
dead and buried a week ' before his
aged parents heard .anythiug about
the accident.
iTS/NG WASTE STEAM. -The Union
furniture factory, owned and operat-
atecl•by the Canada Furniture Manu-
facturers, Limited, has just cempletect
the installation of a new heating
system, whereby the exhaust steam
that heretofore went to waste will be
usedto heat the factory. The instal-
lation cost about $1,500, and good re -

ENLARGING CARRIAGE FACTORY. --
Win Dore is thinking of forming a
joint stock company for the enlarge-
ment of his carriage factory, and if the
town will loan him $5,000 for ten years
teptiya,ble annually, he purposes 'to
erect an up-to-date factory, capable of
turning out one thousand buggies and
five hundred cutters yearly.

On Tuesday morning, the barn Of
Mr T. M. Henderson, Bluevale road,
Turnberry, was destroyed by fire. It
appears that Mr. Henderson had been •
working in the barn at oxj early hour
that Morning, and hung- the:lantern
on a peg.- By sememeene, the lantern
fell and the place caught fire. The
flame was•quenched, it •whe thought,
but sornetinie after the„ building was
discovered to be in a blaze, and was
scan totally destroyed, with nearly all
the contents. • To lose a barn is a
heavy lose ; especially as winter is 'ap-
proaching, when shelter and food for

Edson F. Taylor, Republican candi-
date for sherriff,of Rolette eounty,wae
born in Ontarin forty one years ago.In
1884 he came to North Dakota mid
settled atAt. John. Five years later
he moved to Rolla, where he has slime
resided. He conducted a feed and sale
stable for several years and Was the
owner of a dray line. In 1805 he and
his brother, Wesley J. Taylor, bought
the Welkos hotel at this place. The
following summer, they greatly en-
larged, the building and since that it
has been known as the Taylor House.
After disposing of -the, hotel in -Mt. --
Edson Taylor engaged in the dray
business for a yeee. He now owns a
geed farm a mile north-east of Rolla.
