In "Guisachan," the romantic Scotch estate in Invernesshire, Ishbell, youngest

and he was invited to spend the night. The love at first sight between' the two
young people ltd to their marriage in 1877.
In 1886, Gladstone offered tohis friend, young Lord Aberdeen, the pest
of Viceroy of Ireland. It was a delicate, difficult position, strewn with pitfalls •
which• taxed the watchfulness, tact and diplomacy of the Viceroy to avoid. There
was great distress in the country; the crops and fisheries had failed, the people
gritnly tolerated the occupants aL i2tiblin Castle because protest was useless; but
soon the sunshine and glow of a1fertinn from Lord and Lady Aberdeen melted
the stolid, Sullen reserve, and love reigned where force httd proven worse than

energy to reviving the domestic indtistrit+s of Ireland----weavin , knitting,tin:-

In Canada, where Lord Aberdeen was (.iovernor-General frhrn 180 •8 they
endeared themselves to the people by their 'many acts of kindness. The1 Coun-

the "Onward and Upward Society among the tenants, tlornestics and the poor
on the Scottish estates which has spread oiler the world. The Women's..Liberal Federation which she organized and led as President has over 86,00(1
