A last (Monday) nighre Shamokin, Pa.,
despatch saps : A terrible exploit/I:1
mourred in the Henry Clay Oat, two miles
from Shamokin, thie afternoon) while two
hundred men and boye were at work in the
;mine. Those who escaped the fatal damp
made their way out through the man -
'ways. They told the tory of the fearful
explosion, which °conned tn the new elope,
It shook the entire mine from end to end.
Of those Who still remained in the mine
and who worked in the vicinity of the
explosion were Richard Tuokett, Jonathan
Pox, Peter Kohlinan, Henry Koble, Joel
Dueeman, Thomas 0. Williams and a
Polish miner, name unknown. Coal and
Iron experts promptly arrived, and an
examination of the minewas made. Io
was found to be blocked with gas, whittle
decided the fate of those inside. lefany
plans were suggested and every means
employed to drive out the poisonous gams.
.At 5 o'clock a resetting perty entered the
mine, and near the bottom of the elope
I mind the body of Henry Koble, which
was brought to tbe surface. It was
horribly burned and disfigured,
was almoat beyond recognition. There
was considerable risk in recovering the
body, and some time elapeed before a
second attempt was made. A crowd of
live or six hundred persons gathered,
among them the families of the imprisoned
miners. Whatever hopes they entertained
for their friends was crushed out by the
;ghastly eight of neble's body. Two subse-
ghent attempts were made to enter the
mine, but the rescuers narrowly escaped
suffocation, and were !omelet° return'.
The indicatione are that. the unforititiatee
cannot be reached to.night. Umminese
prevails among the superintendents that
lire may break mils owing to the -great heat
Inside. A strict watch is kept, and prepara-
tions have been made to subdue the fire
should it occur.
The real cause of the explosion is
eunknown. It is believed it was caused by
the tapping of a large quantity of gas which
bad moumulated in one at the breaks
erhere the men, were working. The Henry
Clay slope is owned and opeetted by
leangdon as On., of Elmira and Buffalo.
The explosion is described as the moat
severe ever experienced in the Northumber-
land region.

A last (Tuesday) night's London cable

a large attendance, principally of the legal
fraternity, to hear judgment in the case of
Captain Dudley and Mete Stevene, of the
Mignonette, who had killed the boy Parker
to keep themselves alive. Lord • Chief
Justice Coleridge read the judgment of the
court, oiting authorities at great length.
The court declared that the taking of
human life could only be justified on the
pleea of self-defence. The 'commission of
murder for the sake of preserving one's own
life was unjustifiable. Of course, it was a
duty to preserve one's own life, butduty
often required one not to save, but to mon--
floe his own life. The court must apply the
law and declare the prisoners guilty ot wil-
ful murder, for which thee wee no justifi—
cation. If this judgment was too: severe,
':
the court must leave the prisoners to the
-
clemency of the °town. Before sentence.
was pronounced, both the prisoners pleaded
tor meroy, in view of their terrible situa-
tion when the deed was done. Lord Cote -
ridge said it was the jury's .privilege to
recommend the prisoners to meroy. He
then sentenced them to be hanged,. but
