On account of the drought the past( sum.
mer which was very nnfavottlble for the arowtb
of good root erope, the number of enttriee was.
mush less this year than on aome, previous
years ; but we were agreeably, ettrprieed to sea
the very R.oe erops_grown by some of the ex-
hibitors. which proved ver, plainly that good
cultivation n ill to a large extent Maio up the
lose to the soil, eaueed•benn nnf ayorablosea-
sou like the pant. We found is *Very sites
that the beat roots were grown on land well
maanrett with barn yard manure, wit* , salt
or any other fertilizer. One exhibitor used
500 pounds of salt to the sore, with. over JO
loads of barn yard • manure to the aero, but
are did not see anythipg indioeting, that the
salt had any beneficial effect ou the °rope.
There are some very heavy crops of mangolils,
carrots and potatoes, but the turnip crop
is nearly a failure this year ; the great.
est injury seems to be caused by a small in•'
seat known as the turnip louse, and the moat
that we saw wore quite destroyed by it, but
we are glad to note one exception to thio in
a field containing about 15 acres of t ruipa,
owned and showed by Mr. Robt. M dd, of
East Wawanosh. This field was quite ex-
empt from this pest. The roil was a heavy.
clay loam. Barley waslgrown on this field last.
year ;_it_ was well.. manured. with . barn .yard -
manure last spring, no other manure used.
The turnips were in a very thrifty condition.
All of the crops shown were very clean of
weeds, and showed good care and cultivation.
The first crop inspected wag that of IL,Snell
.t Sons, of Hallett. Soil, a clay loam ; crop
last year, corn ; no manure used, but the field
is situated that it gets alt of the liquid ma-
nure that'draina from the barn yard. There
were seven drills to the rod. Messrs. Snell
took let prize for carrots, 1st for turnips, and
3rd for mangolds.
--The next was Mr. Jos. Morris, of Colborne.
Soil, a mixture between a sandy and a black'
loam ; well underdrained ; manured with baro
yard manure in the spring, about 20 loads to
the acre. This field has been into root crop
fior three - years in succession. There -were
eight drills of carrots and marigolds to the
red and seven of potatoes.
The next succeseful man was Mr. John An-
drews, Bayfield road, Goderioh township.
Soil, a sandy loam ; fall wheat last year. Tbie
field, too, was well underdrained ; manured
last fall with 20 leads barn yard manure to
the acre. Mr. Andrews sowed his seed very
early in the spring, and had a very even °rop
all over his field. Mangolda ten drills to the
rod. Mr. Andrew took 2nd prize for man -
golds and 3rd for carrots.
The next prize taker was Mr, II, Cumin,
Huron road Goderich township. Soil, a
pretty stiff clay loam. The potatoes were
planted on land where mangolde grew last
year.'mN.o manure since that crop. Eight and
one-half drills to the rod. The maugolds
were sown on land upon whioh spring,, wheat
grew last year. Mortared with barn yard
manure, 16 loads to the acre, one•half of
which was applied in the fall, and the other
in the spring ; eight and.one•half drills to the
rod. The carrots followed after a potato crop,
manured last fall with barn yard manure;
Dight and one•half drills to the rod. Mr.Cur-
win takes 2nd prize for carrots and 2ndfor
potatoes.
The 'next was Mr. ,Jae. Long, Colborne.
Soil, a deep rich blank loam, underdrained,
last year's Drop fall wheat. No manure • on.
the turnip land ;la little barn yard manure on
carrot and Mangold land this spring. The
land is nearly new. Turnips 812 drilla to the
rod. Mr. Long took 2nd prize for turnips.
Mr. Thos. Carroll was the next successful
competitor. Soil, a clay 'loam ; last year's
crop barley ; wanured in the fall except vita -
to land ; one•half manure put on in the fall,
the other half ploughed under in the spring.
500 lbs of salt to the acre was used. Drills'
to the rod ; marigolds eight and one•half ;
,potatoes nine ; and carrots nine. Mr. Carroll
took 3rd prize for potatoes. ,
The last crop that we examined was owned
by Mr. Robt. Medd, Westl Wawanosh. It
eoniiated entirely of turnips and was in a
very flonrishing condition, but they seemed to
be a little late in Starting their growth. If
the weather continues favorable they will
grow a great deal yet. The soil is a pretty
stiff clay loam. Crop last year barley ;
manured this spring with barn yard manure ;
eight drills to the acre. Mr. Meed took 3rd
prize for turnips. tt
