The New Era, 1884-09-12, Page 6Notes or a trip tp Montreal. On August 23rd the writer left to atteud the meetings of the Dinning) n Medical and British Science Associations, at Montreal. The drouth, which }sae been eevere in Huron and Bruce, ermine to have been local in range, aa before Stratford is reached thefielde are greener, and in no part visited has there been such a want of rain tie in our own' locality, The crops are, however, about the same as ours, and in the eastern townships, and parts or Quebec, ' where the harvest is only com- mencing, the promise is said to be exoallent. We were transferred to boat at Kingston,, and enjoyed the scenery of the St, Lawrence with its rapids and islands. The shores in many parts appear to be foe farming land, well improved. We run the rapids, mase under the Victoria bridge, and are landed at the commercial emporium of Canada. The meet ing of the Medical &e ocistion was a pleasing, and profitable one, Many excellent papers were read, several by meiubere from Huron, and the discussions proved very interesting. An address was given by the celebrated Law- son Tait, wbu, with malty British M. De, of note, atteuded the meetings and contributed melt to 'their euctmes. The profession of Montreal treater. their brethrsn right royally, and the ceeariou will be long remembered, by the western teen who ere fortunate enough to be present. Dr. Stewart's old friends will be pleased to hear of his success, as profese- or in Mc(. ill College, highly 'esteemed by hie confreres, and he certainly laid his ofd also• crates from Huron boder obligation by his. • kiuduces. Montreal is aline city; the build- ing. fences, and en eets t}re of stone, and wealth bas accumulated within ber borders,. tier public buildings are very fine, and have an sir of stability and eolidit;', as, if they had Dome to stay. The churches are very grand, and well worthy of a visit. Three of the Al lan liar rl were in port, twnd were objects of much interest to the landsmen of our party.. We drove round the mountain, the view from the top is magnificent, and must bo seen to be realized. The cemetetiee "ere visited,;.. they are said to be equal in beauty to Green- wood, New York, and appear to be laid out in a very tasty manner. We saw Hackett' monument, erected by the Orangemen, it is a very find one, but the words "Murdered by a Catholic mob," have been erased from the in- soription. We also visited the grave of Gui- bord, whose coffin was covered by a ton of temp iron, andthe grave filled up with ce- ment, to prevent his removal, when be was interred by order of the Privy Council. The marble slab which covers tiim is bad ly chipped by relic•huntej . That stone was to me a memento of oue of the struggles continually occurring ;bet w'celroit-il and religions freedom. on the oue hunt, and oligarchies, autocracies, and toryisiu on the other, wird I said "Thant: God for 00 I'iivy Conneir." The meetirkat of the British Association, which beau ou Wednesday, created quite a furore 111 tbo city. About 1,700 members, and such a eel•. lection of aristocracy and beauty never graced Montreal before. The governors of McGill' 1,o'1'Yede ga-re-a-coreei eet-ame-in-the TTniversity, which was attended, besides -the* Association, by the rill+' of Montreal, Two bands of mu• sic were stationed in the building, which was brilliantly illuminated, LordaudLady Lana- ' downs occupied a position under a canary of" Hags, at the upper endof the museum, in which those wishing. to be presented were told to assemble. The presentations wore made by Sir William Dawson., Among the brilliant throng we noticed Dr. and Mrs. Taylor, Goderich ; • Dr. Worthiugtou and Mr, H. Hale, Clinton ; Dr. Campbell, Seaforth•; Dr. Elliott, Brucetield; Dr. mid Mrs. Sloan,. Blyth, and Dr.. McKid, of Lticknow, Lord. Lvnsdowne is a mild looming man, alightly bald, and speaks as if considering carefully' what he shall say next: Lady Lansdowne is simply charming ; she has not the quietdig- nity of Princess Louise, or the high iotellec- teal stamp of Lady 1►of erin, bn., her beauty;' easy, grace, and forankness of manner won all Hearts, and the was voted the queen of the. assembly. The papers read in the sections are of a most abstruse character. It is amus'• ing to lathes- sitting for: hours, listening to lt,tpees on applied mechanics, or upon the bottltug up of electricity, or making speeches upon the eiguificance of the arran(;emcut of . the beads itt Wampum Belts, but they' seem to .enjoy it, and appear intensely. interested.. A Very interesting paper' was. read by Mr.. Hale,. of your town, in the Anthropological section, whish elicited a luugthy discussion, and received much comwendatieu._..txour- sions were made on Saturday, we joined the one to Ottawa. and visited the capitol, where we were given a hearty reception. . The. Mayor read an address in the drill abed, whisk was responded to by Sir Frederick. Bramwell, Lord Reese, of monster' teletculio fame, and Prof. Adams, of Cambridge, dis- coverer of the planet Neptune. Lunch was served at the Russel House, after which. tho party was driven to visit the Chaudiero Valls, Hoasoa of Parliament, Rideau Hall, and other placed of interest. The parliament'buildinge are a"oredit to the Dominion, Sind strike the beholder with admiration ; the library is especially beautiful, and the'viowe of the uonntry for many miles. with .the L3urentides in the. distance, will repay the tourist for his visit. The saw mills, with' their 'gangs of saws, and the piles of lumber covering hum; dreds of acres, are sources of wonder to the uninitiated. The land in the vicinity is only of medium quality, but.owing to better mar- kets (hay is $19 a ton) the farmers appear to do as well as with us. harvest is still in progress in this section; not much fall wheat, raised, not one summer fallow seem betweeft, Montreal and Ottawa,110 miles, . Very little preparation for. wheat east of Cobonrg. Root crops are nil till you come ss far west rte Trenton, and not very good after that Fruit generally appears scarce, except around Montreal, where the snow apple is,a splendid crop, growing to a size and beauty which we never saw equalled. • • Montreal Island itself is earlier than Huron. our tomatoes are only beginuing to ripen, while on the 27th Augnat they were coming into their market in Cart•; loads. The shelter of the mountaip is sup posed to favor early vegetation. , While the eastern sections have had more rails than we,' and their harvest this year is as good as ours, and their fields are greener, yet, take it all in ell, we return with the conviction that old Huron will prove oue of the finest agrfcuttti. ral tracts in Ontario.
