Never in the history of this country has
sugar been so cheap, ranging from six
cents a pound for raw to eight cents for
granulated, retail prices, The principal
cause is increased production, It is said
the American market was Raver so active,,
and Vie consumption ao enormous, as at.
present ; in fact, in less than a year it has
increased ,one-fourth, and the "(Jolted
States are using ever twenty five per cent'
Tore sugar now than they did last sum,
mer. In New York, Boston, Philadelphia.
and Baltimore the stock in July was 189,-
789 tons, as against 133,893 the same time
last year. There appears to lie,two rea-
sons for this large supply on this side ot
the Atlantic—improved machinery and
facilities for cheaper modes of Rieman -
tun ;
iema v-ture; and a rapid increase in the quan-
tity of beet sugar made 'in• France and
Germany. The Philadelphia Record
says :—"The enormous atnont of beet
sugar which has been recently made in
Germany has had a great influence upon
the markets, and oow partially rules the
sugar markets ot the world. Some of this
sugar is imported here, but nearly all o
our supply is cane sugar, which comes -to.
us cheaper now because it cannot be
sent to Europe in competition with the
beet sugar made there, and thus, while
we use little of the European article, it is
a great source of benefit to American
sugar consumers."

Indigestion, Dyspepsia, Headache, Ner-
vousness, Urinary troubles, are often caused
by a torpid Liver. Some call it .Liver Com.
plaint, Biliousness, etc, The Liver governs
the system; if the Liver is inactive, one may
be Bilious, or have Fever and Ague, Head-
ache, Malarial Fevers, Dizziness, etc. .These
may lead to worse troubles. This new reme-
dy, ZOPESA,' is now taking the lead of all
other remedies as a L1vEn 'REGULATOR. It
seems to acL hi a rentaficable way upon that
organ—it corrects the bile, the urine, and the

-PERSONAL AND POLITICAL.
It is stated that a Montreal post -of-
fice official, who was recently superan-
nuated on the ground that he had. been
in the service for twenty-five years, re-
ceiving, of course, the usual superan;-
nuatiou pension, has gone into business
its a debt -collector and house agent.
Nothing could show in a stronger light
• the folly and wastefulness of the sup-
erannuation system. A,' man ,who, re-
tains sufficient activity to be employed'
in the arduous occupation of lmnting

than oqual to ,the routine work of a

A writer in the current Week draws a
black picture of thestate of affairs in the
Provinceof Quebec, from whence, he

says, the English-speaking population is
being steadily and ' persistently driven
out. A continuance of the Confedera

French- Canadians in its midst, he con-
siders
onsiders impossible, .and thinks the really
important question which the English-
speaking people of the Province of Que-

dissolution ?? No real cdmmunity of in-
terest or feeling' exists between the
.French, and English portions of the
population, nor can it exist, as the•
French-Canadians of the Province of
Quebec have never lost an opportunity
of declariug their determined antipathy
to the idea of amalgamation in any shape
or form, Na process effusion exists. The
French alone govern the province and
fill all the appointive ofticea, and they
now hold the balance . of power in the
Dominion. They find that cohesion
among. tberselyes is profitable, and
have therefore no incentive to fuse with
their English neighbors.'
Sir John has lost faith in Ontario.
There is too much independence and
general information in this Province to
suit his views of party government.
When he needs some counsel with the
faithful he hies himself to Quebec and
summons about him •the Bleu phalanx

regardless of the results. We are not
aurpised, therefore, that the Chieftain
holds conclaves at his summer resort
Clown the river, at which only the Con-
servative leaders of that Province are.
'participants. .It is a more convenient
way of arranging matters so . that hart,
mony of sentiment is secured. ;But
Sir John must face the inevitable:
His hold on this Province, obtained,
through false promises, end retained for
a period by the same means, must be
relinquished anon. The N.P. has de-'
veloped into a gigantic fraud and the
political views of the electors are :set-
