figures do .net by any means represent the
actual strength of temperaqee sentiment
in the county. Nearly two hundred nodes
were struck off the petition by the coin.-
mittee for various irregularities; and in
Some ,parts of the county the canvass for
signatures was only partial.. Thes very

field is duo to the fact' that the gentleman

that tovvehip failed to take any .steps
in the matter, not being in a position to
attend to it," anci.negleeted toinfOrm the
setxecutive committee of the fact till the'
work of Canvassing for signatures was
nearly completed in all the other munici-
palities. The gentleman thee went out
with the Vetition • and secured 94 names,
but the shthe..time allowed prevented him
fromcanvassing more than a small part
• of the township. • An association for this
township is now organized With Mr. Ro-
bert Harrison as president, and Mr. 'Wm.
Lane as secretary, and when polling „day
arrives the temperance people of Ashfield
will give a geed account of themselves.
The number of signatures in any munici-
pality does not:really represent the num-
ber of supporters to the atte, as a canvass.
is always necessarily intomplete. There
are about io,000. names on the voter's lists
of the cow*, which number includes a
great many duplicates, .and only 25 per
cent of the actual votes are required as
petit -loners, so it will. be seen that there is
an abundance of signatures .to the peti-
tion to ensure a vote,

A match for thejunior championship of
Western Ontario was pl-yed on the agri-
cultural grounds, On Thursday last, be-
tween the Young Canadians, of &Minnie
and the Wanderers, of Clinton. The fact
of it being for the championship, added
much to its interest. The day presented
a very unfavorable appearance and it WAS
feared the long looked for match would
have to be postponed, but before noon the
sun, 8110ne With all it8 brillianey and
eadened the down -cast looks of the bus.
The attendance was very good, but not
what the boys expected Wickets were
pitched at 1 o'clock, the boys won the
toss, and sent the visitors to the bat, but
the bowling and Atop fielding of the
Wanderers, proved too destructive in or-
der to make a very large'score, ao they from. the field with a small score of
•43 Clinton then went to the bat, the
bowling and fielding proved equally good
as will be seen by the score of 55.. The
visiters then resumed the bat, and made
the score of 48, time was then called and
the match was decided on the first innings.
It would be hardly necessary to allude to
the individual playing of the team, but
we cannot bestow too much praise on the
club for the able mani
ner n whiell they
acquitted theinselyes. The batting and
fielding was very good, although several
errors were made. The Same May besaid
of the visitineclub. It may be safely said
that no finer exhibition of cricket was ever .
played 'in qiigt9n.lhan_that which was
played on .ursday last. In reporting
the match the Si. Thomas Journal say:. -
"The boys Vere .handsomely treated by.
the Clinton?, and speak in high terms Of.
Aker., COndnet throughout!" The score.
