• SUCCEED TO THE POSITIONS
OF REEVE AND ,DtPUTY,
BY CLOSE MAJORITIES.
For. 'sonic iine prier to Monday last
a desperate struggle was going on here to
iest the„positions of Reeve and Deputy
from the, strong prestige of Alessi's. Cor-
bett and °pow. Both were considered
verak.,hard inen to beat, more especially
,Mr. Cooper, ancr a good deal of Interest
was aroused throughout the county as to
the ,progress of events in Clinton. The
friends'of the late Reeve andDeputy were
by ne means idle, and carried 017. the con-
test with all the vigor Ana energy possible.
Tbe _utmost good feeling prevailed, how-
ever, notwithstanding the warmth of the
con test. . • e
The opposing candidatesleMessrs. Mc -
Murchie anel Thompson, Were considered
from the outset by their friends sufficient-
ly strong to defeat those who for two years
had occupied the positions. While both
sides fought to win, and ;each expected
to be succe, ssfulaextra efforts appear to
have been put forth to 'defeat MreThemp-
soteand his election by the close majority
of five, shows how strenuous thesseefforts
wero. Verr few votes -were left unpolled
on either eide, and now that the election
is over, we hope all parties will join hands
and work as before, for the interest end
advancement of the town.
In the 'evening an oyster supper Was
provided in the robin over Thompson zti.
Switzer's store-, and after every oyster in
the town had been cleaned out, speeches
were made lee the successful candidates
and about twenty of their supporters.
Very Betio interest was taken in the-elee-
tiOD oeecenneillors, as Sb. Andrews and
St. Jame' Ware returned men by accla-
mation. In St. John's Ward -Will Coats '
