, Montreal, Oct. 24th. --The order has
• gone :Welk on the Canadian Pacific
system to reduce expenses and in con-
sequence of this there will be no nore
new work at the' Angus shops, Mon-
treal' for an -indefinite period. The
' idea is to close down the shops in so
far as new work is -concerned, retain-
ing such of the staff as are doing the
necessary repairs. As the shop em-
ploys some three thousand men some
idea of the magnitude of the orderlean
be surmised. At C. P R. headquart-
ers today it was stated that "hard
times" As the reason for this move.
Tho men in so far as practicable will
be placed on short time and the
remainder will he dieeharged. •

•Stack Yards, Toronto Junction, the
run of stock toeday was 52 cars, with
1,342 heaci of .cettle, 358 sheep,
hog-, 31 cal , c bandi horse. • • "
Trade was very slow to -day. A few
choice pleked , butcher,. cattle' were
sorted •out at top prices, ranging round
$4.50 to $4.75 and for °he lot Of ex-
'
tra choice heifers, $5 was offered . and
refused. The 'general: •run of butcher
cattle, however; was very poor in
,quality, one prominent dealer- remark-
ing that they 'were the poorest offer-
ings he had seen at this, market. As
might be expected, trade • was slow- in
this class of cattle, •a numbet of loads
failing to receive bids, or. in case of a
bid being made it would often be low-
er than the -drover had paid outside.
Except for peinie butcher beef there is
such a poor demand for the common-
est butcher cattle, just now that it
looks as though prices must be lower
than they have been of late. •

conditions for the export cattle in the
trade were much the same as last

pers were not buying at all ; rakes
were again easy except for anything
