• Hotelmen the province over will be
iliterested in the proposal of the 0o1-
1,ingwood Town Council to make the
Annual' fee foe Ilquor licenses le that
place $2500.
The council the other night decided
to plaee the • by-law before the rale -
payers in January. They cent on
the ratepayers endorsing it, which is
not unlikely in view of the' fact thee
last January the vote on the local
option by-law event 794 for to 550
against, the • three-fifths restrietion
proving the saving clause for the
hotelmen. ,
There are eight or nine licenses in
Collingwood, and 41 the fe,e is raised
to $2500 it will result in 'nearly all
of them quitthig business'. Half the•
fee goes to the gevernment and half
to the municipality. .
The hotelmen's association ot the
province were represented by counsel
at the Collingwood Council meeting
last week; but will take, no action un -
till the vote is taken on the by-law.
Then if the result is unfavorable, a
stiff fight will be made in the courts,
for it -is realized that other inunicip-
&rages may adopt the same methods
of Substituting such a . by-law for the
ordinary processes of local option.
Indications are that perhaps 100 nun
niciPalities will vote on local Option
