Goderich 'Township
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Currie Sr. of.the
7t•!r con. had a narrow escape from
losing their eoanfortable residence .on
Monday morning- while the storm was
raging. Some of the faii)y had ris-
en and Rusaae1 had gone cut for a
pail of water when happening to
glance at the roof he noticed teat
some of the shingles were upturned,.
This caused hint to look more intent-
ly and he saw a small blaze at .al-
most the pinnacle of the roof. lie
raised the alarm and his father came
running to his assistance in his
bare feet. They hoisted a ladder and
constituted themselves a bucket bet-
Bade. The senior was the water car-
rier and the son dashed it about and
soon extinguished the flre. But had
the flames not bern noticed for ten
minutes longer in alt probability the
house would have bt:t'n utterly de-
s t voyed.

The • electric storm, which passed
over this part on Monday morning,

Scales had a steer killed. Mr. Harry
Moon's house and Mr. W.• Jamieson's
were struck but did not take fire.
The. large outdoor buildings of Mr.
John Grainger were totally -de tvoy-
ed by . fire. Ile managed to , save •
most of : the• implements. • but some
of the stock was burned. The . loss -
is partly covered, by insurance. . Mr.
.Grainger intends building 'his• silo at•
once and. afterwards the hare, The
'shock of the fire was -,so great .that

The Indians finished their flax 'pull-
ing contract in this neighborhood last
week and have gone to ether fields.
During the storm of Monday .morn-
ing George Watt and Win. Aikenhead-
each had a horse killed by lightning
and Joseph Shipley a cow. A piece
was knocked off. Mr. McKnight's barn
and trees and posts bear marks of
the storm's fury. •

During the severe electric strum
which passed over this section ear:
on Monday morning the barn on the
farm of Mr. John McGee, just out-
side the village, was struck by light-
ning- and burned to the ground. It
was found impossible to save any, of
the contents, so that, all the seauon's
crop, the farm machinery, wagons,
sleighs, etc., and a,number of small
pigs and fowl were also destroyed.
The barn and contents were insured
in the McKillop Assurance Co., for
$1000, which does not by any means
cover the loss but will serve to les-
sen it . somewhat.
Rev. Melte of Montreal, who is
summering at Goderich, and W. E.
Kelly of Goderich spent Tuesday in
the villager -on a fishing trip.
Rev. Dir. Cluff• and wife of Strat-
ford are guests at the Commercial.

out foundation and incorrect. Miss

health, went to Weston to attend the
funeral of her cousin, Miss Chew of

A pretty wedding took place on
Wednesday evening of last week at
the home of' Mr. and Mrs. Andrew
Reid of Stanley, when their daugh-
ter, Mabel, became the bride. of Mr.
Wm. Cudrnore of 'Clinton. The cere-
mony was performed by Rev. Mr.
Taylor of Varna, assisted by Rev. R.
Murray of Chicago, uncle of the
bride. The bride was very prettily
attired in a gown of white embroid-
ered mull .and carried a boquet of
white roses. The' young• couple were
unattended except- by little Miss Ver-
na Reid, "ester of the bride, who in
a dainty frock of pink sill: make a
.sweet little flower . girl: •Miss Reny.
Palmer played Lohongrin's wedding
march while the bridal party took

palms and fern. •
At the conclusion of •the ceremony
and congratulations, the bridal couple

Angus Lamont, 'alt old and well

dropped, dead about 6:45 that evening,
He had his tea as usual; and- was..
working in the driving shed when the
call canoe, 'death being almostinstan-

taneous. • Mr:. Lamont was 73 years
of ago and had 'been in • failing health,
with his heart, for the past year.
