LOGAL OPTION ` NOT CARR
• CLINTON.
Three years. ago Local Opt'on was
effeated is Clinton by a majority of
one hundred and forty-ni're, but on.
Monday the majoii ty was the other
Way, the bylaw having sixty-two to
the good, not suf is eat though to
give it the required three-fifths. This
is inactive cf the ris'ng tide cf
Temperance sentiment hereabouts -so
that it will be well, for those direct-
ly concerned to read the signs of the
'tines and take heed. Disregard for
the l.cense law makes more support-
ers of Local Option than apy thing
else.

Mayor Wiltse was just five votes
short of winning the honor for •the
fourth time, notwithstanding the
fact that he cddn't canvas and ap-
peared to be unconcerned as to ttte re-
sult. Had he circulated aces town
for a couple of days he would in all
probability have again boon. the
choice of the (lectors. However,
with consciousness that ho did his
duty he gladly Mires from Hthe
'• mayor's chair. C
Mr. Taylor made a strenuous. fight
for the honor anis if he devotes the
same energy to the performance cf
the duties pertaining to the . position
he will make a record as one of the
best mayors Clinton has ever ha'l. It
is expected that under his guidance
the council wiz ret off at a good
pace and will not grow weary in well
doing.
For the rceve:$h p Mr. Ford was
worthy of a stronger support than
he recciped for ho has done good
work in the council and to any pro-
gressive measure he has always given
,his cor hal support.
When Mr. Smyth starts out . to
court the free and independent he
surprises even the knowing ones by
the big vote he obtaine. But then he
is a supporter of progre..s combined
with progress which must not at all
tip this case be confused with'theese-
patt;ng.
For the council Mr. Paisley polled
a handsome vote and it was an on-
tirelyp unsolicited .one, ttoo, Hel is
booked for one. of the most import-
ant chairmanships.
•
Your Own Uncle Tom Jackson
would have had still . more votes f
it had been thought ho needed them
and give a hundred town boys ...as
many votes and in that bunch there
would be a Hundred ballots for Tom.
Mr. A. T. Cooper is returneded to
finish his work in conn:.ction with
waterworks and though that is a
somewhat difficult job he will still
have Hine for good roads, etc.
M. T. Mason appealed to the el-
ectors with the skill of an oil war
horse. He too stands for Progress
with a big P. •
Mr T Beacom drew a big vote, as
expected for he combine, experi
ence with tact and good nature
