W. KERR & Sox CLINTON NEW ERA THURSDAY. MARCH 10, 1010. Suggestions For The Housewife Most of the new linen suits are lace- triromed. For dance frocks tulle with chenille lots is new. Many of the new Swisses have em- broidered colored dots. A new fad is the hand bag made of cloth to match the suit. Felt hats are entirely out, with the exception of silk felt. Bedford cord is again in fashion, though much softer in weave, New bracelets expand and contract with the movement of the arm. Variations of the Russian ideas are recurring from time to time. The longer supple drooping aigrette has come into its own again. There is a tremendous vogue of gold and silver in the realm of millinery, blouses and laces. When running dates, figs or raisins through the tood chopper add a few drops of lemon juice to prevent the fruit from clogging thelchopper. To make a tough steak tender, rub it on both sides with vinegar and olive oil, thoroughly mixed and allow it to stand for two hours before cooking. If table silver is placed in hot soap. suds immediately after being used, and dried with a soft,cIean clothonuch of the work of polishing will he saved. A tasty salad is made of chopped celery, season with chopped mint -and - mayonnaise. Put between slices ef bread it makes a dainty suppeer sandwich. To revive root vegetables that have withered slice off the end of each and lay in cold water. in a few hours they will be as hardy and healthy. as ever. Always lower the temperature of the oven somewhat fifteen or twenty minutes after a roast has been placed in it. This will insure that the juices will be retained. Water may be added to the beaten white or beaten whole egg used for dripping croquettes. The proportion is a tablesp000ful for the white and twice as rauch for the whole egg. Browned flour makes delicious brown gravies. Put it in a pie plate and set on top of the stove or in a very hot oven. When it begins to brown it should bp constantly stirred until brown all through. A dry shampoo of cornmeal is very cleansing if properly done. The meal sbould not be allowed to get too close to the scalp and should be brushed out with a gentle lifting stroke. For Coughs and Colds. use Allen's Lung Balsam Relief is warraented or money refunded. t,69S lliomesteads Entered Iii . Canadian West In January. History associates the first ineution of the drug with Arabia, 'says a Writer in Putnam's Magazine. it was as early as /7 A.D. that Dioscorides wrote a treatise on theuses arid pos- sibilities of the pePPY, which com- mands the proleund respect • of even the 20th century surgeon. China, has always been associated. with the growth of the opium industry, but in reality for more than 1,300 years alter her neighbors had realized both the keneflt and the meneee 9f the drug, the poppy was unknown in the Celes- tial empire. It is also a fact that from the first years of opium, impor- lotion China has battled with the ding as no other nation in history has done Opium has conquered China, but she has fought with a martyr's heroism for her freedom. And the vietory of the ding it due net so much to the weakness ofthe nation as teehe hos- tility of her neighbors. It was the foreigner. who . brought opium to China and it was the foreigner who kept it there. A prominent historian eomputes the total death roll of the civil war in bat- tleand hoepital at 1,000,000 lives. There have been years in Chinese his- tory when opium has claimed as many vietims in a eingie year. At one period Japan Was a close rival of the Chinese Empire in the . smoking, of the peppy. When the vie. tines; however, began to mount into The reahn "of millions, three or four years ago, Japan not .only prohibited the importation end manufacture of the drug, but placed a heavy line aa its use. New Zeeland, Australia and the' Philippines have all recorded an opium death roll of hundreds of thou- sands. India still numbers its victims at the rate of thousauds a month.
