The bishop and Missionary Charles Johnson started from Fort MacPher- son September 1, hoping to cross. to the head of the Porcupine River in time to reach Yukon River last fall with a canoe. The head of Bell River, emptying " into the Porcupine, was partly frozen._ so they had' to walk back to Fort MacPherson. For 25 days they Inu'shed in blind- ing foga with little fooel. Their sup- plies finally .gabs out and they ex- perienced hardships worse than those of Peaty. For a long time there was only. tl. handful of food for each man daily.
