The Most Popular Paper In Ontario
The Toronto Daily Star
The best proof that people like a newspaper is their
willingness to pay good money for -it. -
More people buy the 'Toronto Daily Star" than
any other Daily, Weekly or Monthly publibhed in the •
Province of Ontario.
N Moreover, the circulation of the "Toronto Daily
Star" is increasing more rapidly than that of any other
newspaper in Canada.
These things do not just happen.
There must be a reason.
In this case there are several reasons.
The " Toronto Daily Star" publishes Market
Reports 12 to 18 hours earlier than the morning papers.
It is a Newspaper --not an "Organ'' --.-political or
any other kind.
Not only the Woman's Page,. brit the whole paper,
is attractive to women.
It reports athletic events mote fully that: any other
Canadian Daily. '
Its special features, stieh as the i'Chrotlicits of the
Khan", are most entertaining.
Consequently people like the "Toronto Daily Star"
better than any other newspaper. • "

Ate Their Moccasins.
Bishop Stringer, of the bhureh.."of..,
England, . recently arrived at Dawson,
after a hard trip of 47 days front Fort
MilePherson, at the mouth ,of Macken-
zie River, bringing the first news since
summer from that region.
The bishop and Missionary Charles
Johnson started from Fort MacPher-
son September 1, hoping to cross. to
the head of the Porcupine River in
time to reach Yukon River last fall
with a canoe. The head of Bell River,
emptying " into the Porcupine, was
partly frozen._ so they had' to walk
back to Fort MacPherson.
For 25 days they Inu'shed in blind-
ing foga with little fooel. Their sup-
plies finally .gabs out and they ex-
perienced hardships worse than those
of Peaty. For a long time there was
only. tl. handful of food for each man
daily.
Finally the party were compelled to
take their moccasins and mucklueks
from their feet and eat them. They
were able then to walk five or ten
-piles a day until they stumbled into
an Indian Camp. Their moccasins
and mucklueks hadkept them alivel
for five days. 1 ach man had o o
pounds in weight.
Johnson remained at Vert Mae-
f'her:ton. After the rivers froze, the
bishop, with two Indians, started for
Dawson 'Via Rampart and caI21te.
thr,y with no further difficulty.

Their Wonderful Speed and Mysterious
Homing instinct.
Racing pigeons are the fleetestofall
creatures. They Have maintained a
speed of a mile and a half a 'minute
for 5 hundred mile`s, a -cording to a
writer —in Collier's. and they have
flown 700 miles between the rising and
the setting of the sun.
Pigeons have flown a thousand miles
back to the home loft. in 1904 a bird'
covered that distance, 1n 5 days 2
-lours 15 minutes, proving how. un-
erring Is - the mysterious homing in-
stinct that will drive pigeons across the
continent without swerving. But this
test Is not true sport. The birds sim-
ply burl themselves against time -and
space" till they are played out: They
can never race again,
The racer rises into the air with
[wa'vy. slow wing pulsations; then,
once poised over tie starting point.
there is a swifter, shorter beat, and
the time is "hit np" to the third and
permanent wing rhythm, rapid and.
steady as a pulse beat, which carries
it home.'
Racers ay 800 feet high over land. but
low over water: Their enemies as they
fly are wind, rain, gunnerspandhawks.
They do all their eying between situ -
rise and sunset, ff caught out over-
night they fend. for themselves till
dawn.
The homing instinct is lifelong. Dur,
Ing., the Franco-Prussian war the Ger-
roans Caught a homing pigeon wbieb
was on its way into beleaguered Paris.
The bird was kept prisoner for ten
years. It was then released. It imme-
dietelyy returned to its old home. •
