Os Tuesday eight last, the Pacific
Railway debate in the House of. Come
We have 'been informed on: good mous, Waadrawn to•a close. Tho vote
authority„thatourieeelcootemperaryhae on the third reading of the bill lite”
as follows :Yeas, 128; nays, 49.
Since the frit, reading the discession
has been limited, Mr, . Anglin making
'some captious objections, when were to
all intents and purpose to delay the
measure. Nr. Charlton, also made
some objeetion andwas deploring the
ruin of the couptry by comparing cost
ander the new Syndicate to that of the
old. Mr. Plumb replied to those in a
masterly speech that quite satisfied
them,
F.d,LSE RE01?ESENTA'TiONS,
'been going the rounds of telling the
public that in our advertising columns
anumber of thele are being, inserted
'at a very low rate, and the remainder
are bogus. We wish to correct this
false and inaliciaua statenient by re-
ferring its author to any of the bus}nese.
• men whose advertisements appear. in
our columns, as to the rates we ate
charging, and be will probably be made
s little wiser as to the state of our
business. We can also assure our
friend that we do not pretend to charge
$50 per column per annum, and then
some down and insert than for $35,
$40 and $45 per annum, and that he
must have very little confidence in our -
business men to make , then] out so
niggardly, as to wish to have their ads.
inserted for half, nothing or free 'of
charge.
Clinton is a good business town, and
its men can well afford to pay for their
advertising to a journal that will de-
vote its columns to their best interests.
They have come forward and given us
a grand support, and we will make all
efforts to work for their best interests.
We hope that in future our esteemed
friend will be more careful in his state-
atents concerning us, for be it remem-
bered, he is always supposed to be a
good authority, and his words, of -
course, carry weight.
OBSTRUCTION TO LEGISLA-
TION. '
Tax. LiTEST DoD'o1.= An exchange
tells of a new awindie. A sewing ma-
chine peddler takes notes for .payment,
,mid states, the notes are not to pay in-
terest. In some cases the 'notes hove
printed in small type in . the left hand
corner a heavy rate of interest which
the peddler .covers with his thumb
while the • purchaser signs. rFarmers
and others would • do well to .be on
their guard against frauds of this kind.
ON Friday last the Pacific Railway
resolutions were at last concurred'in:
and a bill founded thereon was intro-
• duced and read a first time. The
• . House. was -divided na less -than -twenty;•
'two times on •amendments, brought up,
by members of the Opposition, • It
seems that, badly as' Mr. Blake's
amendment was defeated, it did .not
for a moment,:discourage him and•hia
followers ,from dividing, it off. into
little, pieces, and giving the Little
Guns a chance at moving. am.endnielits
also: Mr: Cameron, our "honorable
• bb t " was amongst
mem er y tour esy,
the number, in .bringing forward a
resolution, of course. objectionable to
the bargain, but the attempt was
futile and it was voted down by a
majority of 69 in a House of .163
• members. We are inclined to' think
that Mr. Blake would receive as'ma»y'
thanks from the people' and his own
constituency, particularly, were he" to
be satisfied with one division and not'
prolong the . House with.: continual
divisions on clauses which he well
knows will net bring to him any ,;tray.
votes. He has already, by his denun-
ciatory speeches, lost the support of
Mr. Coupal, one of his foremost follow-
ers, who has, during, the different
divisions, noted with the Governm'ent•.
Another fact that will be discouraging
to him, is that not one of the Minis-
terial supporters has yet voted with'
the Opposition on. the amendments..
We hope 'that during the remainder of
the present Session the Opposition will
see their way clear that it is not to
the interests of the country to- have
Parliament prolonged to an unusual
length by useless discussion, and that
all attempts to embarrass the Govern- •
fnent on questions of this kind will be
of no avail, but .that Mr. Blake will
show an example to his supporters
well worthy of following. No doubt,
the questional" one and • of . very great
importance, but still a great amount of
time has been lost by continual oppo-
sition. A. motion to have the bill
read a second time has been passed
during the present week, and since a
motion: for thirdreading, has passed
with very little opposition.
TILER ssian Goverumen is about to

which have lead to the existing •eiepres•

'Moscow scents to be particularly
fected in this respect, the cotton matin-

haudruptcies lacing threatened.
