A Trial Under Ancient Laws.
Frank Weiss; the editor of an illustrated
German comic paper at Erie, Pa., is on
trial for libel, and has succeeded in lighting
the law with ite own weapons in a very
anaueing way. The District Attorney at
the opening of the prosecution claimed the
right to " stand aside" jurors under the
ancient law. of 'Edward I:, never repealed
and once sustained by the. Supreme .Court
of Pennsylvania by some musty decision.
tia this way, every German or Irisn juror
was throWn.out, the Court assenting to the
absurd supremaey of this law of 900 yeara
ago, •Weiss, who is a small, feeble, naelan-
choly-looking man, then concluded if ,they

Jam from Turnips and Tar.
According to the correspondent of a, trade,
joarnal, it is a , mistake to ouppose .that
fruit is absolutely necessary to the menu-
factUre of preserves. He describes a visit
to it large jam -producing factory, in which
he found that the work was being bravely
carried on without the aid of fruit at all.
Jams of various kinds were being produced.
before his eyes -currant, plum, stra, wberry,
apriorit, raspberry and gooseberry. Yet
neither currant, plum, strawberry, apricot;
raspberry nor gooseberry was in the build-
ing. Turnips, served the pnrposes of the
fruit. The flavoring matter was extracted
from coal -tar and the resemblance to rasp-
berry and strawberry jam was further pro-
duced by mixing the boiling compound
with 'small Beetle of some cheap
innocuous •herb. A common form of sugar
is used and this is the only honest ingredi-
ent Of the mess. These preserves are
offered as made from "this season's fruit."

In a caseargue yesterday before the
CommOn Pleas Division at Osgood() Hall,
the question of the proper way of ad-
ministering an oath was brought up. Chief
justice Wilsoraexplained that any method
of taking an oath Was legal which was
binding on the conscience. For instance the
Chinese swear on a, eaucer, dropping and
breaking it to show how their Bente will be
broken if they swear ; the 'Undoes,
who consider -a -00W a sacred aninaal, are
ito
the habit of swearing by holdingin their
