field for the distribution of the surplus
juvenile population. To those who have
for years past sent out children for situa-
tions or adoption, we have now to add the
=name of Dr. Barnardo, whose homes for
destitute children in the Old Country are
meeting with daily increasing Popularity,
and are sheltering and training' upwards
of 1,300 boys and girls. Dr. Barnardo, we
learn, has just sent out his first party of
• fifty boys, ages varying from 11 to 17 -
years. These for the moat part are well dies
ciplined intelligent lads, and must eventu-
ally be a source of power and strength to
the country. 'Already applications for -a
large number have 'been received, and
farmers and others wanting lads should

Ociruniv. -It is our painful duty this week in He
to record the death' of a lady, whc, though
only a short, time it resident of Clinton, leaves,
many warm friends to mourn her demise. We
refer to the wife of Mr. Geo. Swallow, who
died on Friday last at the age of 32 years and
3 months. Deceased was a daughter of Mr.
Frederick Phipps, of Torontoand sister' of
Mrs, John Marquis, and Mrs. John Alexander,
of Goderich township. For about two.years
past deceased had been a sufferer from con-
sumption, and despite all that could be done
by kind friends and the best medical skill,
this fell disease carried her to a premature
grave. She was an „earnest member of the
Presbyterian church, and amid all her great
suffering, and even in the hour of death, mani-
fested her love for that Saviour whose love
had been manifested for her, and leaves be-
hind a record of a blameless life. She had
no children. , Her husband has the syrnpathy
of a very large circle of sorrowing friends,

• DURING the meeting ofthe Dornipion
Medical Association at Tormto, last Week,
Dr. Worthington, of Clinton, read a re-
port on "Clirriatology and the prevalence
of diseases arising from malarial poison-
ing." He dealt with the conditions of
climate producing these diseaies. Drain-
age at first seemed to make the matter
worse, but it proved ultimately to be the
only remedy. Ile described the different
kinds of fever and diseases generated by
this. form of poisoning. To remedy the
wide spread evils of malaria he advocated
thorough-drainageTof-swamps-and-recep-
tacles of impurities. The cultivation of
'the Soil did rauch-to improve the sanitary
condition of the country. The subject, he
said, deserved the Consideration of the:
Provincial Board Of Health, and it was a'
question of importance whether the Gov-
ernment should not take action in cases
where intervention wastnecessary on sani-
tary grounds. He stated that malaria was
found in high as wel.is in low grounds,
but the cause ittra - would always be
found to be the decomposition of vege-
table derbis. Dr. Osler of Toronto stated
that ,froin reports received from the States
it appeared that malaria waS,on the in-
crease. Within the past four or five years
in Montreal cases of ague had also been
on the increase, and he considered the
thanks of the Association dhe to Dr:Wor-
thiugiOn -far bringing the matter under
their notice. Dr.Sloane of Blyth,express-
cd the opinion that the trouble was reme-
died by proper drainage and that malarial
diseaou
se whl soon be it thing op e past.
