A Gang at Desperadoes -140":
trent-Ban reatarice ovi the /streets.
A lest (Thursday) night's Montreal des-
patch says : A gang of desperadoes was dis-
covered last eight, and it is believed was
entirely broken up, though not Without
some spirited work on the part of Detective
Murphy and Policeman Leggat. Several
men' giving Toronto es their resideiade
artiVed in town last week and immediately
commenped operations, having successfully
(tarried their burglars' tools here along
with them. They visited several steres
during tbe day, and in hiyman's tobacco
stOre left a halisestd bei called foe again.
In Boisseauts store; few- doore fue er
down, they left another valise in a similar
way. No one called, for them. It was
suepeetecl that •therear premises of
Hyirian's bad been tampered with,
and this baying been discovered to be al
fac0 the Police were apprised of it, and
watein set. , ,It turned out as the Policed
believed', The valises were left' there so
that they would be on hnd when the
plunder could be scoured at night and car-
ried out of the burglarized htore. On Sun-
day; elenaday and Tnesday there was to
evidence that hobberkwasintended: Lest
nigut wilen Deteetive Murphy was going
, •
home he Was told that several men were
loitering about the store. It was 8 o'clock
in the evening, and the premises had been
closed. The detective was soon on
.thes, •spot with a couple of men, and
by thettinie they got -there they found
a waggon and two valises. It was aot
long before the policemen were engaged
in a fightwith the thieves. Murphy
attempted to arrest one of -theta but the
fellow drew a revolver, fired at the officers
And ran.. Closely pursued, he occasionally
halted and hied on the ,officere, who re-
turned his fire, but could not catch him.
They ultimately caugbt him in the Canada
Hotel' barber shop, baying his ,whiekers
shaved off. • He gave .bis Lame as George_

trace ofshis -alleged reeld'ence in that 'city,
could be hall. Shortly after this two more
of We gang were discovered carrying valises,
and one of them, was captured. He gate
his name as William Mackay, and said he
hailed from Toronto. The. valises cap-
tured Were filled; with cutlery, -*lied
hadbeen taken frem, the 'store of Thomas
Phillips, corner of St. SulPice and Leroyer
streets.- It is likely that the men had ne
more connection with Toronto than with
Montreal. , They visited a number of, safe
inamifaetoriee, anli examined safes as pur-
chasers, but they were very much surprised
to know tbat their description was taken in
ea:tell place. They went as auspicious char-
acters. Some four or five elicits were fired
at the Officers and seven or eight at the
burglars, but the oely.damage done was to
a vase werth n15 la the window Of Messrs.

the cause .of the suspension of the First
National Bank, of this city, as farasis
now apparent, was through' mismanage-
ment only, no defalcations on the part of
the bank officers being shown up to the
present time, volume of _business
transacted being greater tlaan the capital
of the institution warranted. The loss, if
any, will fall upon the stockholders. It is
believed that the paper of the bank issued
will be paid, and customers of the bank
protected, A preliminary report to Comps -

probably forwarded by the latter at of
