FLOODS IN TAE 'VEST.
Ad:vices from Winnipeg 'and'. ether
points on tate Red River show that much
damage has already. been done, and more
isexpected•from floods. At Emerson, a
portion of the town was_ inundated, and a
new $70,000 bridge carried away ; but this
is slight in comparison with the damage
at Winnipeg. The fine.new'bridge over
the Red River at that point has been car-
ried away bythe gorge and consequent
t 'flood. Fears were ientertained for the
,..magnifieentLouise bridge o1 the Canada
Pacific, but it still stands, though a por-
tion of the piers was carried away, a ;por-
tion of the city bridge being sunk between
-its piers. The breakwater of the draw
was- swept away, and telegraph communi-
cation with the south entirely cut off.
Wednesday night was an anxious one for
Winnipeg. During Wednesday after-
noon the river rose. 84 feet, getting within
six feet of the flankings of: the bridge,
leaving but little margin for ice to'get iin-.
der.: „Atonoon No. 6; warehouse was sur-
-rounded. "' The street was floodedUpto
the Winnipeg and Western Transporta-
tion office. ' The lower part of Notre
Dame -street was flooded for a'considerable
distance, the water "covering the -entire
width of the --street. The water seemed to
be slightly receding, but as the ice was
jammed ..there could hardly be; any- cer--
tainty that the falling would continue.
A. .gentleman who. arrived', from West
Lynne, reportsall the principal streets un-
der water. Ashdown's hardware store,
Westbrooke & Fairchild's, and Harrison
& Coles' implement warehouses are flood-
ed. People are being conveyed to and
from Mayor Carney's hotel in. boats: The

from the leading Canadian and European manufacturers.: and will .T,be found to
contain the newest and handsomest designs inf-the market, ;reatcare .havina been

to the requirements of N
my 'custom.ers.
Last week my papers were pronounced, by'all who saw them, the.best'value and niy, assort-
ment the finest ever shown in -Clinton..' The amount :sold '.was very large., .The goods turned
out as represented, Rod gave entire satisfaction to my customers. My collection this week is
much larger, the assortment much better, and the prices so low as to defy 'competition.:; I
am confident an inspection will confirm the statement that my 'efforts to meet the' wants of
my customers, are far ahead of anything ever attempted by any dealer in Clinton,
iliI would call attention to the fact that my papers are. 1'1111 21 inches wide, while those
generally sold are only 18 inches.
