returns tire under, rather than over, the
real assessable properties. '

At, the close of the regular -weeklY
prayer meeting of Willis Church, on
Tuesday evening, the pastor, Revt Mr.
Stewart, addressed the congregation, ex-
pressing his regret at the intended; re-
moval of Mr. A. Matheson, referring to
the loss the church would sustain by his
departure, and an earnest hope'for his'fu-
ture-welfare and proaperity, at the fiame
time calling Mr. Matheson fortvard' and
presenting hiin with a piirse- of $150 in
gold, as a slight mark of appreniation,
from the church members, of his -long-
continued, efficient and valuable' services

THERE iS an individual not a thousand
miles from Clinton,' who maintains that

ARBOR Day. -Clinton's municipal fa-

Clinton Literary Society entertained Mr.
A. Taylor at a farewell snpper, at the
residence of Mr. W. L. Newton, an inno-
vation _being intreduced by having ladies,
as well as gentlemen, present. That the
aflair was a complete success goes without
saying, it very enjoyable tine Was spent
until a late hour.- The chair was OCCLI-
pied by Mr. 3. Turnbull, and the vice -
chair by Mr. J. P. Martin. The first
„thast on the programme was " The Senate
and House of Commons" responded to by
• Mr, Mattin. Colin. Stevens replied to
"Our Municipal System," Mr., Manning
to " Our- Society Mr. Turnbull -" The
Educational Interests," Mr. Taylor re-
sponding to "Our Guest," briefly referred'
to the difficulties which he had to en-
counter, his relations vvith the people of
Clinton, and the kindly nay in Which
they had always treated him. Messrs.
Carr and Armstrong' followed on 11 the
