ROBBERY; -On Monday night some• one
broke into Morrison's store and stole
therefrom two complete suits of clothes,
even to boots,' leaving part of their old
clothes behind. There is no clue as to
who the thieves were.
COt7NCIL MeerINO.—Thevillage Coun-
cil met on Monday, 4th inst., in, the town
hall. The Reeve and three of the Coun-
cillors, Messrs.; Stenbury, Cleave and
Middleton, were present. --The first sub-
ject taken into consideration was the state
of the roads within the municipality, and
it was, agreed upon that the roads should
be inspected, and the repairs deemed ne-
cessary be "made immediately.It was
then moved, seconded and carried that
the lowest tender received by the council
for painting the outaidelof the town" hall
should - be accepted, provided : that the
party who obtained the work would-, sign
an agreement satisfactory to the council.
The clerk was instructed by resolution of
the council to put -tip notices to the effect
that the council will pay 25 cents for every
:'tree planted in the streets under the direc-
tion of the council, provided that the tree!
be, properly, protected and grow for two

the 1st of May. '

Last week's issue of the Advertiser states
that John and James Thompson,-:former-
ly"qf Turnberry, and John Deacon, of E.
Wawanosh, were frozen to death in the
late blizzard, in Manitoba. Your corres-
pondent has traced this statement to its
source, and finds -only a very striking ex-
ample of how a story may, be magnified
by continuous -circulation.' 'The father of
the two former of these young men wrote
to relatives while the storm was • raging,
saylfg that they had started • from home
with .two-loads=of furniture, and wore gone
scarcely twohours, when the, storm came
on, buthe was in no way alarmed for their
safety, as theyj. were passing through a

San.—Last .week information was re-
ceived here of the sudden and unexpected
death of Mrs. Wm. "Masters, which occur-
red at Winnipeg. ' 12eceased had only
been married a few months and left here
with her husband a short time ago. The
esteem in which she was held being evi-
denced by the immense crowd who gath-
ered at thisstation on Saturday, night to
'receive her "remains, which, however, did
not arrive. Her funeral 'sermon was
preached here, on Sunday, by Rev. Mr.
Birks, of Blyth;

Rev. Gavin Laing, of Montreal;. has ac-

A correspondent writes as follows:—The
Goderich Star says, the Reeve of Bayfield

Farrow for the 1-Touse of Commons. 'Well,
all I can say is, if true, a better selection
could not be made:.' The Reeve of Bay-
field is every -inch a Reformer.
The Synod :of Hamilton and London
has appointed a deputation to wait upon
the Ontario Government with the view of
having the Bible used'.: as a text book in
the Public Schools of the Province, it be-
ing, however, distinctly understood that
any Public School Board for local reasons
may exempt such schooLsection from the
operation of the. Act' -contemplated. The
question. is to be broughtbefore'the atten-
tion of other denominations."
