A HURONITE IN BAD COMPANY.
A couple of weeks since. we published a
Paragraph from a western paper -ander the
above heading, in reference to Mr. Alf.
Brown,' of Scotland, Dakota, fori"nerly of
Morris. The Scotland Citizen, quoting
the same paragraph, replies as follows f—
t° Ali the Parties named in the article
live in Dakota (assuming that A. J.. Brown.
lt Co. means Alfred Brown) and can be
found at home anytime they may be called
on. Mr. Brown had not skipped. He is
and has been right here in Scotland, and
emphatically 'states that he has no notion
of."skipping" or of evading any charge,.
that: may be brought against him. No of-
ficers from Racine or elsewhere have been
in Scotland to treat 'Brown and his gang;'
no requisition papers, have been issued,
and probably will not be, as it is not clear
how a man can be taken to Wisconsin and
tried for an alleged offense committed in
Dakota. As we Stated last week` we do
not . assert, or deny the guilt of the parties
charged by Mr. Foos, through the, Sioux
City Journal. We have no knowledge, or
ineans-of.:,acci airing aeurate;knowledge, of
the character of the dealings between these
•agents and the manufacturers of the ma-
chinery. The evidence; whatever, it may
be, is in possession. of ,the parties who
claim to have been defrauded ; and in this
view we reiterate what we said last week
`If Mr. Foos, or any other manufacturer,'.
or his or their agents, have received forged`
paper, and have as strong evidence against
the parties who are alleged to have, made
it as they represent, then why, in the
name of justice' and common sense, don't
they have ,Vie guilty ones' arrested and
punishedl', - The rules of law, and it
should be -of decency, (where the crime
and the criminal are not patent and be-
yond
dispute) hold an accused person in-
nocent until the contrary is proved. If
Brown and' Grant & Covell have done'
.what the Journal charges, then they have
violated a plain Iaw,and if the evidence
exists which the Journal :alleges, there is.
no impediment to their arrest, conviction -
and punishment. Would not theinsti-
tution of legal proceedings be better than'',
assailing men charged with Crime through
the editorial columns of :newspapers and
`badly mixed'' despatches: There is no
disposition or desire on the part of the
people of Scotland -'to .shield any citizen
from the operations of the •law, which may'.
be invoked against him. If `Brown and:
his gang'. are guilty, as charged, the peo-
ple of Scotland, in the interest of justice,
and for the; sake of'their ,good' name and
credit, will aid in their conviction—not in
the .columns of outside newspapers, but in
a properly constituted court of Igw."
