in nearly all the grocery stores In town a
number of masculinescongregate nightly

Busu.isss CHANGE. —,We understand
that Mr. H. Stevens has bought out the
interest of Messrs. 11. Thomson and J.
McCartney, in the planing mill, and, with
111r. J. Scott, will continue to carry on
the same. The retiring members of the
firm have the Manitoba fever. Messrs.
Scott & Stevens have 'a good business, anel
like their predecessors, being -practical.
men, should Push the business' for all it is
worth.
OBITHAi.Y.--Died, in Exeter, on the
lst inst., Rev. Wm. Hooper. He was
superannuated at the last Bible Christian;
Conference, and has been ailing more or
less from that time till his .death He
was for several year's 'chairman of this
district, and just previous to -his superan-
nuation was stationed at St. Thomas, and
previous to that was four years in Mitchell.
He was widely known, and. his death will
be generally regretted, •
THE recurrent frost followed by thaw-
ing, with the small quantity of snow this
winter, has had a " very injurious effect
upon the fall wheat, and there appears to
begood reasons for .fearing a small crop,
of fall wheat. There is,;also somei'grounds
for fearing injury to it from tfie)hessian
fly. It is a long time from the present to
the time when growth generally commen-
ces, and as it is,.very open weather now
the chances are that wheat will have hard
usage before it gets through wintry weather
REMOVALS. - Messrs. Craib, Macwhir
ter & Co: have removed to the corner
store in the Coats' block; 'directly :opposite
'
their old stand. They certainly :,have a
very fine store, one that would be a decid-
ed credit to places of much greater pre-
tensions than Clinton. The premises va-
cated by them have been leased by Mr.
C. Dickson, bookseller,- who is somewhat
crowded for room in his present stand, and
he will move his stock down to this end
of the town this week.
WHAT THE PEOPLE .ARE SAYING.—
That when the assessors get. through,'
Clinton will befound to haveheld'itsown
better than any other town in the' county:
That a new blockon the south corner of
Rattenbury and,Albert Streets should be
erected. That^many of those who go to
Manitoba to hire out, will wish they hadn't.
That they would„lil;re to see a big celebra-
tion here on'the 24th •of May. That the`.
streets are in "an awful muddy condition.”
That Clinton should be, the County town
at a"n early day., as hereis the hub of the
°aunty both teriito, rily and for business.,
FRoai AFAR,—On Friday last Messrs.
Corbett & Boles, of this town received a
letter from a merchant at -Prince :;Albert,:
nearly 800 miles west of Winnipeg,grz-ask-
f r
in for information in reference s enc e to certain
in
articles, of their manufacture. He stated..
that he had seen an announcement'in the
NEW -,ERA, that they were about; erecting
a new factory, which';was the cause of his
writing to them. They also received an
order from a Queoec.firm fora quantity of
goods. This shows the benefit of, making.
announcements in a ,: widely -circulated
journal •
SOAP PEDDLERS. --,On Saturday after-
, a couple of these gentry reaped .
good harvest on -the market ground, num-
bering . their, victims by • the score. .Oiie
person who had managed to resist' temp-
tation all morning, was roped in at .noon
to the tune of $4, and ;..others for like
amounts.. Until people learn, 'that '.they
cannot possibly beat -these Hien at their,
own game,:it is very little use trying to
show ;them thefolly of investing with
them. We believe. that. at the:next meet
ing'of Council, the prevention of these.
swindlers working our town is to .be'
broughtup, andaction' taken .therein,, ,
The;Clinton.NEW. Em& says: "Several"
parties in Seaforth and Goderich..:have ex
pressed the wish' that their property was
in Clinton instead' of where it is, then it;.
would lbe worth something. In reference
to Seaforth we -don't believe a word•:of it, ;
andunless the :parties names are forth
coming the NE'•ERA will -have to stand
corrected. It is evident that some person
has been ". taffying up" our .venerable
friend.—Seaforth Sun. The NEw'ERA's:,
statement AS far as Seaforth is concerned,
is absolutely correct, and one of the.
largest.property holders in that place, is
our authority for the statement—the Sun's
assertion notwithstanding.
.. Last week a county Conaervative loaner
published an extract from ..Mr. Platt's
speech, delivered at one of the late eon
-
v ntio'ns, asserting that nails in 1878 were
$6:50 ' and $7 per cwt. `but now, through
the operations of the N.P. they were only
$3_ The'fact thathe uttered such a fable -
hood. is proof that he believed that some,
ofhis:supporters-were so strongly partizan,
and ignorant that_they_eeould swallow it
without a thought "about it. Ne any
commonsense person knows that the
jeet of the N. P. is to raise prices for the
benefit of the manufacturer, or else what
good is it:? and everybody knows;wellthat
nails were not that,: price, 'in fact,. there
is lout little differende in: them,: between
that time and now..
