Monopoly hi Manitoba
Alluding to Mr. Norquay's foolish conduct
at Ottawa, in surrendering provincial rights,
the Winuipeg Sun observed :—
" Mr. Norquay may be ,perfectly satisfied
with the position in which bis treachery and
duplicity has left this province, but it does
not follow that the people here are either satis-
fied, or ready to rest under the injuries which
have been inflicted upon their best interests....
There is not a farmer, a mechanic ora mer,.
chant iii. -this country, who does not know and
feel and suffer from the intolerahle exactions
which au unchecked monopoly is enabled to
place upuu them. No.,man wbo has ever had
au ounce of fright brought into the province
by rail but knows the exasperating deloye,.
the perfect indifference oI the monopolists'
agents, the losses and annoyances which at-
tend the movement of a traffic ander present
conditions. And no one who has had to en-
dure that abominable experience eau fail to
kuow the excessive, exorbitant and- out
rag. o is charg. s to which they are subject-.
ed. Nothing Will ever re,ii rily this state
of affairs but honest compelision, and no
one is iu a better position to know this than
the Hon. John Norquay ; and yet that gentle
man is not afraid, in the ee.) of his knowledge,
and experience, to deliberately—and—coolly-
lend himself as leader of a movement which
has for its object the placing of the neck of:
this province under, the brutal heel of a soul-
less oppressor."

We believe, first, that the brotherhood of
nations is as beneficial to each nation as the
brotherhood of families is to each family ; and
secondly, that unrestricted fileedom of com-
merce among nations would prove as beneti-
tial to every nation as the unrestricted .free=
dom of commerce .between States, counties
and towns has proved to the American na-
tion. The restrictions of commerce.betweem
independent nations is a relic of .an age in
Which citizens were forbidden tobuy.outside
of their county, borough er city; as well as
outside of their nation.—(Christian. Union.
