of Nov., blocking railway trade ter
some hours and freezing 02 clegreea be-
low zero. We now have "a daily pas-
senger service over the O.
tween Winnipeg and Vt/attrons,
and a train twice a week between
Watrons and Wainwright, Ate. The
Battle River bridge is still under eon -
&traction. It is one of the largeat
iron bridges in the west, being . 0370
ft. long and 200 ft. high. As ,stion as
it is finished they (the G. T. P:)
tend constructing their line into • Eda
monton, 140 miles from the rism.
This' will mean lots of work for all
kinds of men. The grading is all
done, ready for the steel. We have at
present 670 miles of track built from
Winnipeg to Wainwright, Alto. -Now
for a little allout this western coma.
try: rt is kertainly the greateat tradt
of and that ever la`y before a memo's
eye, You can see for miles and ,miles
in the province of Sask. and cantiOt
see,.a tree. Yoe Aee farmers. pulling
six ' to eight two -furrowed plows with
a gasoline engine or three or four set
of diamond harrows. Stades of
grain are hauled togetherall over the
farm generally putting two close to-
gether. They had as fine a crOp in
this country ars a man would wish to
see this past suinnler. Being a 'rail-
way man I had the advantage over
some people of, travelling to and fro•
over the three provinces all summer.
'They uffered a severe. froet in the
vicinity of Saskatoon and the sur-
rounding country on the 13th t,f Aug.
cutting the potato vines down to the
ground. Ilowever, everybody seems.
happy and sociable and if a young
man or woman wante to get ' along
there is always some way out of the
difficulty. The country is a very heal-
thy one due to the climate being of
such a dry nature. I would say to any
young man wishing to do „well or get
along in this world that he could do
many a worse thing than strike for
Wee -tern Canada. Come out' here, men.
Come prepared to put up with a cer-
tain a.mount of hardship for you will
certainly get your chare of that, but
stay with it and you will - win out.
for there are privileges here and will
be for some sime to come that do
not exit t elsewhere for the poor mare

PRINCE EDWARD*IN CANADA.
King Edward's. ' Grandfather Visited
America in, MI
Prince Edward, afterwards Duke of
Kent, and the father of Queen Vic-
toria, ptissed through lurlington,
Vermont, in February, 1/93, He vane
from, Quebec, where he had had com-
mand of a regiment. His trip through
the eOuntry 'wee accompliehed in
carry-alls and sleighs; a courier had
been sent on to Burlington to Rowe
for his accommodation. There were
only seven frame houses In the whole
'village, and but One, that of Phineas
Loom's, large enough to receive so
numerous a party,
The Prince arrived in the afternoon
with thirteen carry-alls and sleighs,
and left the thied claY before noon.
He had with him two aides and two
bodyguards, a lady and a cook. The
lady was to go to N'ew York, and the
Prince provided the sleigh, which wee
to convey her with an abundance of
fur robes, and placed a large, dog at
her feet.
A little incident ocbuired on the
passing of the Prince and pie lady
from the house to the eleiglif'which il-
lustrated the character and physical
strength of the Prime. Aneawkwaed
but stout young Man was standing in
the "path, not making room readily
for the party to advance. Prince Ed-
ward advanced and, taking • him up.
bodily, set him on one side .in the
snow, At this place (Burlington) he
.dhinneeed the teamsters who bad
brought him from Canada, and .an.
gaged five farmers to take. him on
to Baton. It was said by these n2en
that he was a jolly companion, en-
joying the pork and beans, mit cakes
• and cheese.

town was. Colonel Stephen Keyes, a
'gentleman of the old school, who wore

then stated that he had brought with

to pay their respects to him. They
