In the contest which has just closed,

This is juseets untrue as a lot Of the

during the campaign. All over Ontar,

calling on the electors to defeat Sir

and everythipg possible was done to
stir up religious hostility to him, where
it could have an ettect.
Now that the people have given their
answer to this kind of warfare, it is 7
time it should stop. Sir Wilfrid's re-

slightest with his public duties, and he
has just as much right -to it as any

The great surprise of the elections is
Ontario. Conservatives gloated oyer
the promise of that delectable proy-

they were pleased to describe as Laur-

them to be dead as a door -nail there.
Yet, the returns show the Liberals to
be in almost as strong a position in
Ontario as they. eyer were before in
the Federal Parliament, The eonelu-
sion is, not that everything the bang-

Part of that suspicion had undoubtedly
to do with the fear of the people that
if the Conservatives got into power
they would not be strong enough to
resist the high tariff mongers, who
were all prepared to make a raid upon
them. At the annual meeting of the
Canadian Manufacturer's Association,
it was announced with triumph on seq.

that an early revision of the tariff was
