Harry Porter Drowned
When the news came by telephone -
,
from godericie on Sunday evening
that Harry Porter • youngest son of
Mrs Porter, Ratteobury St West,
had beendrowned, not Only were,
people shocked by the announcement
but the heart of sympathy went out
to the bereaved mother, who through
years of adversity ' had brought her
family to a point where the tension of
life was not so great as formerly. The
sad task of breaking the news • to her
fell to the 'Wei- Rev. Mf: Kerr and
wife. Her tWo smashed only reeently

Inent, and they went to canon with No

lost a valuable articles near. the
Mouth of the Maitland Riyer,
Sunday ropriaing, and in the evening
along with his brother Howard they
went over to see if they , could find it.
Being unsuccessful, Harry suggested
a swim, but as the elder brothers -did
net care to go in he said that he would
wait on the bank until Harry was
ready to go to camp. Young Potter
tripped off and waded sut about
wenty feet fromshore.when suddenly
he disappeared,being earned awayby
an undercurrent. He arose again in a
moment and called to his brother on
Shore forhelp, who instantly jumped
in with his clothes on,
buthefore
Howard &Midget him hewas out of
sight, A boat was procured and the,
'body was found in a few' minutes. All
that cosi(' be done by the army medi.
cal corps and doctors in trying to re -
vivo respiration was without resUlts.
An inquest was held, which showed
Wit he had burst a, blood IreaSel in his
head, and this would account for his
drowning so quickly, and the inability
of reviving him. Mr David Tielady
went up on Monday, to accompany
the etinaalisshome. The band of the
33rd Batt playing the dead march, and
the naembers of No 4 Company escorted
the remains to Goderieh station. At
Clinton sympathetic friends met the
hody,which was cceveyed to thehome
ot the het -broken mother; the fune-
ral taking place on Wednesday after.
noon, and being largely attended.
Harry Porter was is quiet, unobtrusive
young man,who was universally liked,
having been at onetime connected with:
the Sovereign Bank; he Was a member
of the Canadian and Ancient Order of
Panders, 'who were menet in a
body, (there being a very fine turnout)
and who took Cart in the burial cere-
mony at the Cemetery, as is their cue -
tom; the handsome floral offerings
werde tribute to his sterling worth
and appreciation. A death of ' this
kind is inexpressibly sad, and touches
human syeapathy more keenly than
when it Voines in the ordinary way,
and to say that Mrs Porter has the
sympathy of the eoronninity does not
express the case as it really is fhe
pall -bearers were Messrs Roy Ball, R.
