It looks as if the woollen manufact-
urers are unreasonable, when they de-
mand an increased tariff on imported
woollens. On the general run of wooll-
en imports the present tariff is 30 per
cent, on British imports, the regular'
rate is 35 per cent, while the tax on
German woollens runs up to nearly
fifty per cent. Surely that should be
enough.
Mr Whitney announces that the gen-
eral election - for Ontario, will take
place either during the ;Second week in
June or in September. All depends
upon whether or not the voters' lists
for the unorganized districts can be
got ready in time to admit .of an early
‘, contest. Thus the Premier has gone a
\cOnsiderable distance in •taking the
4ublic and the opposition into his con-
fidence, and fel this he is to be
com-
zuended. His position is different to
that of the Dominion Government, for
-hebas held his last session of tbe:press
ent parliament, while the Dominion
House can hold another session. But
it would save candidates and the pub-
lic some anxiety if there was some
general idea when a Dominion elm -
:lion would be held.
