ago which has probably •never been

and was attacked by. the dog. Young
Duncan, hearing the commotion,went
out.to ascertain the cause, •and then
decided to take a hand in the fray
himself.
• The deer was so intent on its cow-
batwith the dog that .t did not notice
the arrival of a third party, and Dun-
canajunaping quickly to oneside, up-
set -He then sprang upon it and
.held it down, but before he could real-
ize his position the deer was on its
feets and in spite of the unusual bur-
den on its back it started off through
the weeds at a :great speed, The dog
gave chase, and this seemed to give
wings to the deer's feet. The rider
grimly hung on however, until fully
a couple f miles had been covered,
when he conceived the happy idea of
hitting his steed over the eyes with
his hat, .which he had grasped in his
hind, and by this means he succeeded
in getting him slowed down sufficient-
ly to let him jump off.
