Rudolph's red nose: Christmas light or all -natural?
A firefly? A lightbulb? who knows?
Hullett Central Public School's Grade 1 class has some pretty unique ideas about how
Rudolph came upon his glowing nose. Back row, from left: Chase Huzlebos-Coates, Breanna

When it comes to air traffic at
Christmas, Santa Claus trusts his
reliable reindeer to get him through
the worst of weather with Rudolph's
red nose guiding the way at the
front. What makes the red spotlight
work? Well the Grade 1 students at
Hullett Central Public School have
their own ideas.
"His red nose looks like a light
bulb and it glows because there is
probably a firefly stuck in his nose.
It flew in there and got stuck and
that's what makes it glow and, when
Rudolph flies, the firefly gets cold
so it grows brighter to try and get
warm "
Dakota T.N
"Rudolph's nose is like the lights
on our Christmas tree. It's like a
light bulb, but tinier and not as hot.
He got it when he was born because
he was special and had to be special
or else he couldn't join Santa Claus'
Christmas team."
Emmitt S.
"Santa gave Rudolph his glowing
nose. It's supposed to scare away
people who make him scared and,
because all the reindeer make fun of
him, it always glows when he's with
them because he's scared. So when
he's flying, with all the reindeer
right behind him, he gets scared and
it glows and shows Santa where to
go"
Chloe V.
"Rudolph has a light bulb stuck in
his nose. He was born with it stuck
there and it's a special kind of light
bulb that elves make so he can get a
new one whenever he needs to."
Lillian 0.
"There's a light that glows bright
red in Rudolph's nose because his
nose is on fire. He can make fire in
his nose, but just a little bit. It's not
like a dragon. It's just a small fire"
Rodney A.
"The sun makes Rudolph's nose
glow during the day when he is
playing with the other reindeer but at
night the moon makes it glow. It's a
special nose that glows when
Rudolph sees another light. It's just
special like that"
Brooklyn L.
"There is a red glowing bone in
his nose. Santa put it in his nose so
Rudolph could show him where to
go and guide his sleigh."
Justin F.
"Rudolph's nose only glows when
it's dark outside. Rudolph is special,
so his nose is magic and that's what
makes it glow. When it's not dark,
it's just a red nose, like a clown has,
but when it's dark it shines really
bright"
Hailynn G.
"I think that Rudolph has a special
kind of candle in his nose that
doesn't ever blow out. It's like a
lantern. It was put in his nose when
he was born and instead of taking it
out, he used it to become Santa's
leader reindeer."
Josh D.
"Rudolph has an exit sign in his
nose. They glow the same as his
nose so I bet that's what is in his
nose. They have the same kind of
red light so that must be what it is."
Chase C.
"There is a special kind of shiny
red nose that Rudolph has that none
of the other reindeer have. It only
works when he's flying though, so
no one can know how it works
because you can't look at his nose
when he's flying because he moves
around too much."
Holly G.
"There's a light bulb in Rudolph's
nose. His mom and dad put it there
because he was afraid of the dark
and it helped him sleep when he was
a little reindeer. Then he was able to
use it to lead Santa's sled at night."
Will N.
"Rudolph's nose is a special light
powered by love and it glows
because Santa loves him a lot."
Jaxon B.
"Rudolph's nose glows when
people are mean to him, that's why it
glowed when the other reindeers
wouldn't play with him and called
him names. It's a special light that
glows when he gets called names"
Lilly F.
"Rudolph's nose glows because
he's special and special people have
special things like shiny and red
noses"
Breanna 0.
"There is a light that comes from
the moon to help Rudolph's nose
glow. The moon is so bright it can
give light to Rudolph so his nose can
glow."
Ali L.
"Rudolph's nose has light in it
because of a magical light bulb. He's
a reindeer wizard, but the only spell
he knows how to cast is the one that
makes his nose light bulb glow
because he can't talk."
Sophia Y.
"Rudolph's nose glows when he
moves his legs. Whenever he moves
his legs it flashes the lights in his
nose. I don't know how, but his legs
make his nose glow."
Emily S.
"There is a light bulb in Rudolph's
nose. He was born with it and he can
turn it on whenever he wants. It has
a cover on it that he can close when
he doesn't want it to shine."
