Morrison Olympics, games mark Christmas
Good memories
Emily Morrison has grown a bit since this photo was taken,
but she still has plenty of memories from her childhood,
especially those of her dad Ralph, who died in a farming
accident when she was 10. (Denny Scott photo)

always a large affair, with her father
being one of eight children. For
years, as the family grew, Christmas
would rotate through one of the
Morrisons' homes. However, in
recent years it has simply grown too
large, so it's been moved to
Lucknow United Church, which,
Emily said, has its perks.
Although she admits to being
resistant to change when it comes to
family traditions, Emily said that
Morrison family Christmas on
Boxing Day always featured a
viewing party for the beginning of
the World Junior hockey
championships. And while she
thought that tradition might have to
end with Christmas held at the
United Church, it wasn't so.
The family was able to make use
of a laptop and internet access, as
well as the church's newly -
purchased projector, to project the
game over the church's pulpit, while

members of the family sat in the
pews worshipping Canada's second
religion.
The competition didn't end on the
ice, or above the pulpit, for the
Morrison Christmas. A lasting
component of the celebration is
some form of gaming program. One
year the family planned a car rally
with numerous stops throughout
Lucknow, while another year the
Morrison Olympics were held.
This year Emily's family has the
privilege of planning's the event's
festivities and she has a number of
games planned, including a bologna -
eating, snowflake -designing game
among others.
Everything changed rather
drastically for the family when
Emily was 10 years old and her
brother was eight when Ralph was
killed in a farming accident shortly
after Christmas in 1999. The family
pulled together and rallied around
one another to achieve a level of
normalcy that Emily looks back on
and calls incredible.

For Sandra to keep the family
together, as well as the Morrison
Berries farm business, must have
taken courage and hard work, Emily
said.
While things may have technically
changed greatly at that time, Emily
said she also remembers a continuity
because of a tightly -knit network of
friends and family that is intact
today and remains a huge strength
for Emily and the rest of the
Morrison family.
Earlier this year the Morrisons lost
another member of the family
when Emily's grandfather Gordon
passed away in his 100th year.
And while there has been
sadness surrounding those losses,
this year has also marked the
entrance of a new member into
the family, with Emily becoming
an aunt for the first time of
Samuel Ralph — Samuel named
for Emily's great-grandfather and
Ralph after her and Michael's late
father.
So while traditions may change
slightly to welcome in Samuel, they
will remain largely intact for the
holiday season, just expand to
include a new generation.
