Ryans feel loss, celebrate family on holidays
Plenty of affection
Jack Ryan and his late wife Marianna were always known
to be very affectionate with one another from the day they
were married until several years ago when Marianna lost
her battle with cancer. Next year, when the Ryans host the
International Plowing Match in Walton, it will be a
celebration of good times and bad, which is how the family
views holidays like Christmas. (Photo submitted)

were simply too tough to afford
presents for the holidays.
Jack and his siblings understood
there would be years like that and
that their parents were facing
economic challenges.
Jack grew up in a tough time and
found he didn't celebrate Christmas
perhaps as much as some of the
other families in Huron County. On
the farm, in many ways, it was just
another day.
When Jack was 30, he married
Marianna and the couple began
holding Christmas celebrations on
their own, but in the early years, that
just meant returning for Christmas
dinner to Oma and Opa's house in
the Walton area.
Peggy said that in many ways
Marianna injected fun into Jack's
life and taught him to take some time
for himself and their family and take
some time away from work when it
was possible.
As Jack and Marianna had their
own children, Joe, Peggy, Monica
and Steve, they brought their own
traditions to their new family for a
childhood that Peggy says made the
kids feel lucky.
"We had a wonderful childhood,"
Peggy said. "We were very lucky
and blessed with what was provided
for us "

All the Ryan children agree that
they were lucky when Christmas
rolled around every year. Their
parents were loving and thoughtful
and Santa was generous with gifts
under the tree.
When Santa brought gifts to the
Ryan children, they came
unwrapped, but in piles divided by
child. Each pile had a chocolate
letter on top coinciding with their
first name to let the children know
which pile was theirs.
That was after, however, the
children would often quietly work
their way downstairs for a preview
of what Santa had brought them.
Because the gifts were unwrapped,
apparently Joe, the prankster of the
family, had to be watched, lest he
shift gifts from pile to pile.
The rest of Christmas Day would
be spent playing with the toys they
received from Santa before their
grandparents came over for the big
family Christmas dinner.
As the Ryan children have grown
up and branched off into families of
their own, they always make sure

This year, the family will gather for
Christmas at Joe and Rhonda's home
on Canada Company Road.
Over the years, Jack and
Marianna's children have presented
their parents with some pretty
memorable gifts. One of which was
a hot air balloon ride over London,
which Jack says he still remembers.
