Christmas worth the wait for Morrison family
Time's ticking
When Emily Morrison and her brother Michael were waiting to open presents, their father
Ralph had a rule: no presents until breakfast is done. With that rule firmly in place, Ralph
always made sure he had an extra cup of coffee or bowl of cereal to make his kids squirm.

Christmas is all about family and
fun, and plenty of waiting, for the
Morrison family — specifically
Emily of Lucknow, the Marketing
Co-ordinator for the 2017
International Plowing Match in
Walton.
When Morrison was a young girl,
her father Ralph would get up early
and run through the chores on their
Lucknow-area farm on Christmas
morning, leaving behind Emily and
her brother Michael to open their
stockings with their mother Sandra.
When Ralph returned from
tending to the farm, it was time for
Christmas Day breakfast, another
annual tradition with the Morrison
family. It was important, Emily said,
because she and her brother weren't
allowed to open their Christmas
presents until breakfast was over —
which could sometimes take a while.
"My dad would always make sure
to have an extra cup of coffee or a
second bowl of cereal to delay the
process while my brother and I were
going crazy," Morrison said.
She remembers one Christmas
when she and Michael had finally

had enough and she grabbed her
father's bowl of cereal and attempted
to drag him into the living room so
he could finish there while the kids
were opening their Christmas
presents.
Later that night, the family would
always travel to Seaforth to eat
Christmas dinner with Sandra's side
of the family, while Boxing Day was
historically spent with Ralph's side
of the family in Lucknow.
The family would always get a
new board game for Christmas, so
playing it was on the list throughout
the holidays as well. There was also
a day designated for new movies.
New movies would always be part of
the gift -giving process and on Dec.
27, the family set time aside for a
movie marathon for all the new
films — a practice that has gotten
more difficult to keep going over the
years as people have moved away
from physical copies of movies.

family Christmas, Emily said it was
