An excellent effort The Blyth Lions Club, the Blyth Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Blyth Legion Ladies Auxiliary again teamed up to host a Christmas toy and food drive this holiday season. All three groups worked to collect food and toys over the last several weeks, with food making its way to the North Huron Food Share and toys going to the Salvation Army. The drive culminated Saturday night at the Lions Club's annual Christmas dinner and dance at the Blyth and District Community Centre, with representatives showing off this year's collection. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Blyth 140th launches with new calendar, Jan. 1 kick-off event By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen The Blyth 140th calendar of events will be available soon, with the publication available for presale at local businesses. An update on the plans of the Blyth 140th committee was presented at the Blyth Business Improvement Area's (BIA) Dec. 7 meeting. The report included the announcement that the calendar would soon be ready. Committee Chair Crystal Taylor explained that, while having the calendar was great, she was a little disappointed with the turnout of local businesses and groups events in the publication. The calender was originally created with the idea that every event the public could attend throughout 2017, which marks the 150th anniversary of Canada and the 140th anniversary of the founding of Blyth, would be listed to encourage people to attend, however Taylor said there were fewer events featured in the calendar than anticipated. "We did get 140 events, but I'm disappointed with the business input into the calendar," she said during her report. "There isn't information coming from the businesses and this is a way of free advertising for them. For most, it just didn't happen. Some businesses were great, but others didn't send information." Currently the group has ordered 100 calendars, with 48 of them already sold. One of the group's first big events will be a special celebration of the new year on January 1 at the Blyth campground beside the Blyth and District Community Centre. "The event will be from 1 to 3 p.m.," Taylor explained. "Mike Siertsema is going to be doing a demonstration of dog sled racing for us and we've rented snowshoes so, if there is snow, people can do that." Games are going to be organized around the event and snacks and hot dogs will be served. Taylor also explained that the start of the largest celebration for the Blyth 140th, July 28, is also Cenotaph Day at the Blyth Legion. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and includes a rededication of the currently -under -renovation Blyth Memorial Hall.
