JOHN DEERE 519-523-4244 www.hurontractor.com Brussels Livestock report Fed steers, heifers sell on active trade Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending Nov. 25 were 2,377 cattle and 268 lambs and goats. On Tuesday fed steers and heifers sold on a good active trade at prices $2 to $3 higher. Choice steers and heifers sold $130 to $134 with sales to $148. Second cut sold $126 to $130. Cows sold fully steady. On Thursday veal calves sold on a good trade on an active market at prices $2 to $3 higher. Lambs sold on a good active trade. Goats sold steady and sheep sold higher. On Friday calves and yearlings sold on a strong active trade with calves selling $5 to $10 higher and yearlings selling $3 to $5 higher. Aden Brubacher of Listowel, consigned four steers that averaged 1,529 lbs. and sold for an average price of $134.99. One blonde steer weighed 1,435 lbs. and sold for $142. Chris Smith of Brussels, consigned 14 head that averaged 1,633 lbs. and sold for an average price of $131.93. One limousin steer weighed 1,645 lbs. and sold for $138.50. Aaron F. Martin of Newton, consigned eight head that averaged 1,504 lbs. and sold for an average price of $142.82. One blue heifer weighed 1,375 lbs. and sold for $148. Darren Johnston Farms of Bluevale, consigned 28 head that averaged 1,420 lbs. and sold for an average price of $126.85. One red heifer weighed 1,430 lbs. and sold for $134. There were 350 cows on offer. Export types sold $70 to $75 with sales to $81.50; beef, $80 to $90 with sales to $94; D1 and D2, $77 to $82; D3, $65 to $72; D4, $50 to $65. Doug and Amy Miller of Lucknow, consigned one red cow that weighed 1,655 lbs. and sold for $94. There were 12 bulls selling $91 to $109. Roy Bayer of Sheguiandah, consigned one black bull that weighed 1,860 lbs. and sold for $109. There were 170 head of veal on offer. Beef sold $150 to $180 with sales to $190; good holsteins, $125 to $140; Si heavy holsteins, $120 to $135; heavy holsteins, $115 to $125; medium holsteins, $100 to $110. Paul M. Martin of Lucknow, consigned four head that averaged 823 lbs. and sold for an average price of $170.15. Two limousin heifers averaged 850 lbs. and sold for an average price of $190. Joni J. Horst Warnke of Dobbinton, consigned 34 steers that averaged 910 lbs. and sold for an average price of $181.32. Fifteen steers averaged 817 lbs. and sold for an average price of $188.25. Allan Aitchison of New Liskeard, consigned 70 head. Fifty-three heifers averaged 907 lbs. and sold for an average price of $160.79. Two charolais heifers averaged 880 lbs. and sold for $169.75. Locals honoured with year-end 4-H awards The Huron County 4-H Leaders' Association held its Awards Program on Nov. 20 at the Seaforth Agriplex honouring dozens of residents. Jolande Oudshoorn received several county awards during the event including the Murray Cardiff Award for top all-round member, the Ontario Plowmen's Association Award for outstanding agriculture 4- H member, third place in The Blyth Citizen Award for the press reporter book competition and first place in the Huron County 4-H Leaders' Association for the club secretary book competition. Other county award winners include Myah Vingerhoeds who won the Don Pullen Award for highest overall score in the county; Jessica Hewitt who received the Warden's Novice Award for highest score among first year competitive members; Deanna Haanstra who received the Ben Lobb Award for essay by a junior member; Graham Falconer who received the Dedication Award for dedication to 4-H; Loretta Higgins and Maisy Jefferson who took first and second place in The Blyth Citizen Award press reporter book competition and Julia DeJong who took second place in the Huron County 4-H Leaders' Association club secretary book competition. The winning Go for the Gold Team was the Hensall Life Skill team including Emily Bieman, Evan Krebs, Sarah Hendriks and Katelyn Parsons. The Stan Jackson Memorial Award Section 1, given to the Huron County 4-H Beef Member with the highest total score in the county, was presented to Cole MacPherson. Section two of the Stan Jackson Memorial Award includes prize money for 4-H Championship Beef Show at the Seaforth Fair, recipients include Steer Award winners Maggie Durnin (first) place), Alycia Coultes (second), Dakota Coultes (third) and Brooklyn Hendriks (fourth) and Heifer award winners Ashley Higgins (first place), Cole MacPherson (second), Tyler Murray (third) and Austin Bieman (fourth). Other award recipients in the Beef category include Melissa Maclntyre, Hands-on Christmas prep The Blyth Canadian Centre For Rural Creativity (CCRC) hosted a special Christmas Crafting Weekend through the Fashion Arts and Creative Textile Studio (FACTS) program at the Blyth Trinity Anglican Church. The event featured dozens of creative opportunities including making `tatted snowflakes' under the tutelage of textile artist Susan Kendal. Dairy award winners include Courtney and Katrina Gublemann who tied for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Award for highest scoring member of the 4-H Dairy Club; Emily Franken who received the Member of Orr Insurance and Investment Group Award for presenting the champion 4-H dairy calf at the Seaforth Fair; Kurtis Frischknecht who received the Auburn Co -Op Trophy for reserve champion 4-H Dairy calf at the Seaforth Fair and Huron Bay Co- op Award for being the champion 4- H Dairy Showperson at the Seaforth Fair; Rebecca Franken who received the D & D Glass Award for being reserve champion 4-H Dairy showperson at the Seaforth Fair; Simon Gublemann who received the ScotiaBank Award for top novice dairy showperson at the Seaforth Fair; Isaac Van Soest who received the Huron Holstein Award for highest total score with a holstein calf and Adeline Treble who took the second Huron Holstein Award for second highest score with a holstein calf. Myah Vingerhoeds received the Huron Goat Club Award for highest score member of the goat club. The Joan van Sligtenhorst Awards of Merit, given to the top member in different age groups, went to Janelle Gras and Caroline Schaefer as the top novice members while Evy Verschaeve was named top junior member. Judging Competition Award winners included Jessica Hewitt, who received the Hensall District Co -Op Award for high novice judge in the competition, Max Johnson, who won the Hill & Hill Farms Limited Award for high junior judge; Dawson Coultes, who received the Judging Competition Award for the high intermediate judge, Hillary Schramm who received both the Hill & Hill Farms Limited Award for high senior judge and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Award for high overall judge, Rylin Wormington, who won the Excalibur Insurance Award for highest score life skill club member and the Judging Competition Team Award, which was presented to the winning team of Carsen and Jacob Flood, Braydon Grandmaison and Schramm Sheep award winners included Jolande Oudshoorn who was the highest scoring member of the 4-H Sheep Club and received the Old Mill Award; Carsen Flood who received the Lucknow Co -Op Award for high novice member and the Green's Meat Market Award for champion market lamb at the Seaforth Fair; Aidan Lee who received the Shillalah Farm Award for having the champion ewe lamb at the Seaforth Fair; Makena McEwan who received the Lisa Thompson Award for being the champion 4-H Sheep showperson at the Seaforth Continued on page 23 BRUSSELS LIVESTOCK Division of Gamble & Rogers Ltd.
