Local G2G Trail clearin grading complete and quality of the trail as much as possible in preparation for the 2017 International Plowing Match, which will be held in Walton, one of the communities the trail makes its way through. The clearing and grading are important steps, Lee said, in the process of potentially connecting the trail to the area's snowmobile trails. They have to be wide enough, he said, and have a good enough grade in order to accommodate snowmobiles and groomers as well. While there is still plenty of work to be done, Lee says that the portion of the trail near the Blyth Greenway Trail is a perfect example of what organizers hope the trail can be. Despite starting with significant brush and rough grades, the trail has been improved, widened and Blazing a trail Thanks to a custom trail -clearing machine from Claussen Farms near Brucefield, much of the clearing in the Huron County portion of the Goderich-to-Guelph Rail Trail has been completed in the last two weeks. Chris Lee of G2G Inc. says that the process of clearing and grading will continue east through the portions of the trail that are in Milverton and Millbank on their way to Guelph with the hopes that the trail will be largely accessible and cleared in time for Canada Day, 2017 and the International Plowing Match set for late September in Walton. (Photo submitted) By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Clearing is well underway on the Goderich-to-Guelph (G2G) Rail Trail with hopes that grading will begin later this year or early next. Chris Lee of G2G Inc. says that clearing began at the Blyth Greenway Trail early last week. The Blyth portion of the trail is the western -most portion of the trail that had yet to be cleared and graded. A custom-designed machine by Claussen Farms near Brucefield is being used for the process, which is clearing brush back as far as is allowed, in order to ensure a large pass throughout the trail. In just over a week, clearing has made its way from Blyth to east of Walton. Lee says he hopes clearing will make it past Monkton by the end of the week and soon on its way to Milverton and then eventually to Millbank. Much of the work, Lee said, is weather -dependent, but the hope is that most, if not all of the trail will be cleared and graded by spring of 2017. Then, once further signage has been installed and bridges have been repaired, the trail will be accessible from one end to the other, hopefully, by Canada Day, 2017. Lee says the group's goal is to continue improving the accessibility smoothed out to the point that someone in a wheelchair should be able to comfortably travel the trail, he said.
