Wingham theatre receives $30k Trillium grant
A big help
The Wingham Town Hall Theatre Committee, represented here by Doug Kuyvenhoven, left,
received a $30,000 Trillium Foundation grant to help with the restoration of the theatre, which
is located on the second floor of the North Huron municipal building in Wingham. Shown
announcing the funding are, from left: Kuyvenhoven, North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent and
Huron -Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson. The funds represent one quarter of the $120,000
fundraising goal of the group and brought the total funds raised to over $100,000. (Photosubmitted)

council's Nov. 15 meeting, saying
that through evaluating the Huron
County landscape and its electric
vehicle charging stations, there was
a clear hole in the map through
Seaforth's portion of the Hwy. 8
corridor.
In fact, Wilbee said, Seaforth is
the only major community along
Hwy. 8 not to have a station, which
would discourage travel by an
electric vehicle along Hwy. 8.
He felt perhaps installing a
charging station would be a move in
the right direction, but
acknowledged that many of the
charging stations throughout Huron
County and beyond have been
funded by private companies or
organizations, rather than the
municipalities themselves.
Locally, there are charging
stations in Blyth (The Old Mill),
Belgrave (Euro Parts, the former site
of East Wawanosh Public School),
Walton (McGavin's Farm
Equipment) and in Wingham (in
front of the North Huron Museum).
Looking at the government's map
of electric vehicle charging stations,
Wilbee said, there is a station in
Seaforth, but it is private and not
accessible by members of the public.
Wilbee wondered aloud which
local entities, perhaps the Seaforth
BIA or a Seaforth business, would
be interested in funding a charging
station, or if perhaps it would be a
project suited for the Economic
Development Department and its
Director, Jan Hawley.
Chief Administrative Officer Brad
Knight said that he and his staff
would prepare a report on the
request and present it to council.

Thompson and North Huron
Council representatives were on
hand on Nov. 25 to congratulate the
Wingham Town Hall Theatre
Committee members on receiving a
$30,000 Ontario Trillium
Foundation grant.
The committee is attempting to
revitalize the Wingham Town Hall
Theatre, located on the second story
of the North Huron municipal office,
without requesting tax dollars from
North Huron. The project includes a
face lift for the interior of the
theatre, bringing the space up to
code as far as fire prevention issues
and a new heating, ventilation and
air conditioning (HVAC) system.
The fundraising goal to re -open
the theatre is $120,000 and, with the
$30,000 grant, the committee has
raised $105,725 through donations
and fundraising events.
During the presentation,
Thompson said theatre plays a very
important role in the communities
she represents.
"I know from first-hand
experience how important a role the
theatre has played in our
community, and it's great to see
these upgrades being made so it can
once again be home to great
concerts and community events,"
she said. "Thanks to all the
volunteers for their hard work to
ensure the Wingham theatre is a
gathering place for the community
once again. This Ontario Trillium
Grant is a much -appreciated
investment that will help update the
safety measures in the theatre."
In a press release from the
Township of North Huron it was
noted that the funds from the grant
were to be directed to the
installation of a new fire suspension
sprinkler system for the second -
floor theatre. The release also stated
the work is near completion thanks
to the donation.
Work by the committee continues
for fundraising to upgrade some
door hardware for fire code, and to
complete the upgrades to the heating
and air conditioning system. This
piece of the project requires some
structural work to support the new
rooftop units, engineering to
design the HVAC system for the
theatre and the installation of
the equipment.
Currently the theatre does not
have any cooling and relies on
electric heat. A new energy-efficient
natural gas heating system and air
conditioning will improve audience
comfort and extend the season
during which the theatre can be
utilized.
The project is ongoing, so no date
is set yet for the re -opening, but the
committee hopes to have it open in
2017.
