Council approves
new Clinton park
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Central Huron Council has given
municipal staff the go-ahead to
begin work on a new multi -faceted
park in Clinton.
After months of work and
amalgamating various different
aspects of the park, council will now
go ahead with the plans for a park
that will feature a splash pad, a
playground, a skateboard park and a
gazebo.
A final design plan was presented
to council at its Nov. 21 meeting by
Community Improvement Co-
ordinator Angela Smith, as well as
Steve Campbell and some of the
plan's designers.
Walkerburn
The ladies of the Walkerburn Club
were welcomed to the home of
Eileen McClinchey on Oct. 17. It
was the first meeting of the
2016/2017 term, as the September
meeting was cancelled.
Christena Gross opened the
meeting with a prayer, followed by
the Lord's Prayer. She had a reading
about gingerbread. Eileen gave the
Local RIDE checks nabs several drivers
Huron County Ontario Provincial
Police (OPP) officers were busy
setting up numerous Reduce
Impaired Driving Everywhere
(RIDE) checkpoints during the first
week of the Festive RIDE
Campaign.
In total, 48 RIDE checkpoints
were conducted by Huron OPP
officers. The number of RIDE
checkpoints set up during the first
week of the Festive RIDE campaign
led all of the OPP Detachments in
West Region.
Hundreds of drivers were spoken
to and nearly all of those drivers
were allowed to continue onto their
destinations without an issue.
However for some of these Huron
County drivers this wasn't the case.
On Nov. 24 a 42 -year-old male
driver from Seaforth attempted to
evade a RIDE checkpoint that was
set up at the intersection of MTO
Road and Saltford Line. An officer
noticed the attempt to dodge the
RIDE checkpoint and officers went
after the vehicle and were able to
stop the vehicle a short distance
away. Upon speaking with the
driver, the investigating officer noted
the driver had been consuming some
alcohol. A roadside screening test
was performed and the driver
registered a fail. He was then
transported to the Huron OPP
Detachment where he provided
samples of his breath to the
intoxilizer technician. Upon
providing his two samples he was
found to have a Blood Alcohol
Concentration (BAC) in the warn
range. As a result he was served with
a three-day driver's licence
suspension. His pickup truck was
also towed from the scene.
On Nov. 26 at 10:10 p.m. the
driver of a Pontiac Pursuit tried to
evade a RIDE checkpoint located at
the intersection of Kinburn Line and
Front Road. Officers noticed the
vehicle turning around so they
pursued the vehicle and were able to
stop it not far from the RIDE
checkpoint. Upon speaking with the
driver the investigating officer noted
a heavy smell of marijuana coming
from inside the vehicle. A search of
the vehicle was conducted and the
driver was found to be in possession
of a small quantity of marijuana. As
a result a 27 -year-old male driver
from Huron East was charged with
Possession of Schedule II Substance
— Marijuana. He will have to attend
court in January, 2017 to answer to
his charge.
On Nov. 27 at 9:40 p.m. a Dodge
Ram pickup truck entered into a
RIDE checkpoint located at the
intersection of London Road and
Blyth Road. While speaking with the
occupants of the vehicle police
officers observed numerous bottles
of open alcohol inside the vehicle.
As a result, the 20 -year old male
driver from Huron East and his three
under -aged passengers were all

Liquor Licence Act.
Also on Nov. 27 at approximately
10:30 p.m. a Dodge Ram pickup
truck entered into a RIDE
checkpoint located in Clinton on
Huron Street near Erie Street. Upon
speaking with the driver, officers
determined the 24 -year-old male
driver from Huron East was driving
with a suspended driver's licence. As
a result he was charged with Drive
Under Suspension and his motor
vehicle was towed.
Huron OPP officers will continue
with their Festive RIDE checks all
through December to the first
weekend in January 2017.
There was some discussion,
however, about locating the splash
pad too close to the Clinton
Raceway, as well as potentially
locating it on top of the former
wading pool to address safety and
liability issues.
Councillor Marg Anderson said it
was her understanding that the
splash pad would be located above
the former pool for those reasons.
Campbell said that in the initial
design that hadn't been the case, but
that there was no reason it couldn't
be moved.
Anderson then made a motion to
approve the plan with the splash pad
being placed on top of the location
of the old wading pool, which
council approved.

call. Ila Cunningham gave the
treasurer's report.
Donations will be made to the
Clinton, Goderich and Wingham
hospitals. The material that was
purchased during the summer for the
100th anniversary quilt was passed
around and more decisions on the
quilt were made. Ila, Maggie and
Vera are to meet at Deanna's home
on Nov. 7 to cut the material into the
necessary pieces.
The next meeting is on Nov. 21 at
the home of Maggie Treanor, with
Dorothy as president of the month,
Deanna on lunch and Eileen the
program. There will also be a
miscellaneous auction.
Christena had an interesting
contest on turkeys and a geography
contest. Eileen served a delicious
lunch and a social time was enjoyed
by all.
