North Woods to enter IPM beautification comp.

Planning for the future
North Woods Elementary School students recently got in touch with John Gibson from
TREEmendous in the hopes that he might help them plant a tree in the new playground at the
school to help with shade. Students from the school were able to watch the tree be planted
that day. This is only the first step in the school's ambitious playground project, which will be
followed by a transformation of the property's front lot for the 2017 International Plowing
Match's Beautification Competition. From left: Nate Baillie, Spencer Smith, Sophia Boyer and

The latest entrant in the 2017
International Plowing Match (IPM)
beautification competition is North
Woods Elementary School, one of
the closest schools to the site of the
match.
Principal Wendy Armstrong -
Gibson said that once she heard that
the IPM was hosting the
beautification competition, she knew
she wanted the school to be
involved.
One of the preliminary actions was
bringing on Susan Alexander, a
parent who has been heavily
involved with the school over the
years, to help get the ball rolling.

Council wants IPM cost report
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
With a number of costs associated
with next year's International
Plowing Match facing Huron
County, councillors want to be kept
up to date on what the county is
spending.
Huron County Engineer Steven
Lund presented his report on
increased roadside mowing to
council at its Nov. 16 committee of
the whole meeting, in which it
was suggested that $80,000 be
added to the 2017 budget to
cover costs.
"As indicated in the roadside
vegetation management staff report
of Sept. 21, 2016, staff indicated
they could look at contracting out
mowing the entire ditch area of
county roads surrounding the 2017
International Plowing Match (IPM)
site. This will improve the
appearance of the rights-of-way
surrounding the IPM for the year
2017," Lund said in his report. "We
have received a quote from a
municipal contractor to cut the
rights-of-way monthly (edge of
shoulder to fence line), starting in
mid-May of 2017 until the 2017
IPM in September (four cuts). The
cost is estimated to be
approximately $80,000. Staff looked
at renting their own equipment, but
the cost was estimated to be $95,000
mainly since we don't own our own
specialized equipment. Large
diameter brush will have to be
cleared by staff over the winter and
spring in order to facilitate this
planned operation."
Council was in favour of the
improvement to the roadside
mowing program, but Councillor Art
Versteeg was concerned about the
level of funding being allocated to
the IPM.
Chief Administrative Officer
Brenda Orchard said that staff was
already ahead of Versteeg and that
Natasha Fritzley from the Economic
Development Department was in the
process of compiling those costs for
a report to council.
Orchard said there are many costs
associated with hosting the match,
including services and staff time,
including IPM and agriculture
marketing co-ordinator Emily
Morrison, who was hired by the
county earlier this year.
The report will be presented to
council by the end of the year.

declared the school's intention to get
involved, plans were drawn up and a
timeline has been put in place.
Amanda White from Buds 'n
Blossoms designed the plan for the
school.
Armstrong -Gibson says the plans
for the front of the school, which is
an expansive portion of greenspace
on the west side of Ethel Line,
include planting a number of trees,
as well as improving some of the
school's gardens that face the road.
The principal also says she's
hoping to implement an antique (or,
at least old) piece of farm machinery
to be placed near the front of the lot,
close to the road.
Armstrong -Gibson says she's
hoping that someone in the
community will perhaps volunteer a
piece of farm machinery for the
duration of the contest to help the
school out.
Anyone wishing to help the school
in its efforts to be beautiful in time
for next year's IPM or to donate the
use of some antique farm machinery,
is encouraged to call the school at
