PAGE 10. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2016. CCRC to host Christmas crafting weekend The Canadian Centre for Rural Creativity is hosting a special Christmas Crafting Weekend at the Trinity Anglican Church in Blyth Nov. 25-27. The event features instructional sessions just in time to make special gifts for Christmas. Organizer Jennifer Triemstra- Johnston, the program director for the Fashion Arts and Creative Textile Studio (FACTS) in Blyth, who has spent a decade working at the Blyth Festival as a costume designer, said she hopes the event is a social one where people can not only learn but enjoy each other's company. "There will be multiple sessions happening at the same time, which we don't do normally," she said. "There are three instructors on each day, offering specialized classes." The classes offered include fabric dyeing and painting, stamp and stenciling on fabric, indigo dyeing textiles, silk painted cards, marbled silk scarves, kanzashi poinsettias, felt matryoshka creation and many more. The courses will be run by Triemstra-Johnston, Susan Kendal of Barrie and Irene Kellins, owner of Stitches with a Twist in Blyth. Kendal is a Barrie -resident who is a textile artist with costume design experience. She operates a store called the Spool Lounge, a sewing shop in Barrie. Triemstra-Johnston said she enjoys collaborating with Kellins because she's local and because of her experience in unique craftwork. "I like to work with Irene Kellins because she has the shop in town, is a local artist and has really neat crafts," she said. "It's nice to use a local artist and support the community store through her teaching. Her knowledge of knitting and crocheting and chain maille allow us to focus on skills that haven't been shown before" Kendall taught some classes through the FACTS program in the summer and Triemstra-Johnston said they were a success. "People really enjoyed her classes," she said. "She has her own style and it includes making some very individual works for people. The work ends up reflecting the recipient." The programs are open for registration until the day of the programs and class sizes are limited to 15. Triemstra-Johnston said she expects certain courses, like the fabric dyeing and painting open studio, which run for three hours on Friday, seven hours on Saturday and six hours on Sunday, will be a popular choice. She also said that the felt matryoshka doll class will be popular as well. The dolls are also known as nesting dolls.
