Youth Beef Show competition, Ashley
Higgins of Brussels took second place in
the Junior Beef - Maine Anjou Yearling
category, Mason Weber of Belgrave tied
for eighth place in the Junior Beef -
Commercial, Yearlings category.
Michaela Rodger of Auburn tied for
third in the Junior Beef - Angus, Yearlings
competition.
Connor Rodger of Auburn tied for fifth
in the Junior Beef - Limousin, Yearlings
competition while Colton Rodger, also of
Auburn, tied for sixth.
Emily Pennington of Whitechurch tied
for sixth in the Junior Beef - Charolais
Yearlings competition.
In the Queen's Guineas competition of
the Youth Queen's Guineas Show, Dallas
Coultes of Brussels finished third in the
Colour Steers competition and Owen
Weber of Belgrave finished fourth in the
Black Steers category.
In the Youth Sheep competition, Jolande
Oudshoorn of Auburn placed 10th in the
Junior Sheep - Senior Showmanship
category.
Animals owned by Doug and Rob
Marriott of Wingham took fourth place in
the Female Calf born in 2016, minimum
three -month-old category — heat six and
fifth place in the bull calf, born in
2016, minimum three -month-old
category — heat four.
in the Jersey Female Mature Cow category
with Paullor Giller Rilee. The win earns
him the Jersey Ontario Banner, the
Australian Trophy and the Westlandyn
Farms Banner. Paullor Giller Rilee also
won Grand Champion Female Reserve
and Senior Champion Female positions in
the Jersey results.
Jerseys of Franken's also took 17th place
in the Female, Senior Calf category, fifth
place in the Female, Summer Yearling
category, second and 17th in the Female
Junior Yearling category, fifth in the Junior
Breeder's Herd category, eighth and 20th in
the Female, Senior two-year-old category,
10th in the Female, Junior three-year old
category category, seventh in the Female,
Senior three-year old category, third and
fifth in the Female four-year-old category,
seventh in Female Mature Cow category
and second in Breeder's Herd category.
In the Preserves competition, Elaine
McDivitt of Seaforth took 12th place in the
Fruit Jam Other category, eighth in the
Savory Jam or Jelly category and 19th in
the Spirited Jelly category.
Tanis VanderMolen, also of Seaforth,
took first in the Marmalade category,
seventh in the Spirited Jelly category, sixth
in the Single of Mixed Fruit Conserve or
Preserve, sixth place in the Savory Jam or
Jelly category, and 17th in the Fruit Jam,
Other category of the Preserves
competition. In the Amateur Pickling
competition, VanderMolen won sixth
place in the Relish category, third in the
Chutney competition and sixth in the Chili
Paul Franken of Clinton took first place Sauce competition.
Obituaries
EUGENE "Frenchie" SAUVAGE
Eugene "Frenchie" Sauvage, RR 1,
Bluevale passed away at Wingham and
District Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 19,
2016. He was 80.
Eugene will be lovingly remembered by
his sister Annick Thomas and her family in
France and by his dear friends Larry and
Grace Elliott, RR 1, Bluevale; Jacques and
Lucy Marcoux, Brussels and Richard and
Anne Keeso, Listowel.
Private arrangements have been entrusted
to McBurney Funeral Home, Wingham.
A celebration of Eugene's life will be
held next spring.
ROBERT WEBSTER HESSE
Robert Webster Hesse of Brussels
passed away suddenly at Owen Sound
Hospital on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016. He was
in his 86th year.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife
Lucy, Brussels; children Linda
VanKooten, Stratford; Beverly Hearn,
Calgary, Alberta; Barbara (Dave Wahl),
Medicine Hat, Alberta; Norman Welsh,
Kitchener; his grandchildren Jacob and
Lucas VanKooten, Travis and Jessica
Wahl, Kayla and Laura Hearn, Eric
(Cynthia) and Shane Welsh, as well as five
great-grandchildren.
Robert will be remembered by Laura
Illingworth (John) and sister-in-law
Charlotte Hesse. He was predeceased by
his parents Wilfred and Elmina (Dahmer)
Hesse, daughter Cheryl Hesse, brothers
John Stanley (Myrtle) Hesse and Calvin
Hesse.
Robert was born and raised at 601
Ontario Street, Stratford and lived and
worked as an auto body mechanic at his
shop on Downie Street. He moved to
Kitchener in 1971 where he met and
married Lucy in 1978. He then worked in
industry selling steel barrels. He retired at
the age of 55, against his wishes, due to
health reasons.
In 1991 he moved to Brussels where he
became active in the community, joining
the Lions Club, where he held the office of
president, the Masonic Temple, Mother
Lodge Preston #297, where he became
Master in Brussels and joined the Shrine
in 1995. He held many offices in various
Shrine Clubs and joined the Fire Brigade,
Hillbillies, Desert Rats and Blue Water
Clubs.
Robert enjoyed many interests,
including the "coffee club in Brussels",
had great vision for renovating homes,
loved spending time with family and
friends, enjoyed travelling in his Mercedes
(his mafia car) to various destinations. He
and Lucy also travelled to Alaska,
England, Spain, Portugal, Madiera, as well
as all over the U.S. and Canada, living the
dream. Because of declining health he was
not able to get about on his own for the last
year of his life.
Family and friends will be received at
Melville Presbyterian Church, 55 Dunedin
Drive, Brussels on Wednesday, Nov. 23
from 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The funeral
service will take place at the church on
Thursday, Nov. 24 at 10 a.m. Rev.
Gordon Williams and Rev. Elwin Garland
will officiate. A private family interment
will be held at Riverside Cemetery, New
Hamburg.
As expressions of sympathy donations
may be made to Mocha Shrine Centre,
London for the Canadian Shrine Hospital.
A Masonic service will take place
Wednesday at 5:45 p.m.

A step in the right direction
The North Woods Elementary School playground project recently got a boost from
the Grey Township anniversary, which was held earlier this year. Proceeds from the
euchre tournament were donated to benefit the project, while proceeds from other
aspects of the event were donated to local community centres throughout the Grey

Annaleise Carr, 2012 and 2.014
Ontario Junior Citizen, Simcoe, ON
At 14, Annaleise Carr was the youngest person ever to swim
across Lake Ontario. Two years later, Annaleise swam
across Lake Erie. Combined these efforts raised
awareness and hundreds of thousands of dollars for
Camp Trillium, a family camp for children with cancer.
Her book, Annaleise Carr: How I Conquered Lake Ontario
to Help Kids Battling Cancer, inspires others to take on
great challenges and help their fellow citizens.
